I think we're gonna need a bigger digger.

You need big tools to move big objects. Why not run another large ship up behind it and pull with that? Use the anchor chain to pull with.

How heavy are those containers on the bow,? Anyway to shift them towards the back to lighten the bow? Jon

Containerships are relatively cheap because there is no capital expenditure to fit cranes or derricks on deck, just call at ports that have gantry cranes to move the containers. God knows how many days sail away is a lighter (barge) with a crane tall enough to reach and size enough to resist the moments moving containers would produce.
It is much easier to transfer liquids. I would suspect the Master has already pumped off his ballast and maybe some of his fresh water. If he transfers bunker oil aft he may cause the stern to go (harder) aground. Perhaps he can pump some bunkers into lighters, but I haven't seen any in the press photos so far. Surely, better minds than mine are engaged in solving the problem.

I was thinking they should just ram it with whichever cargo ship is sitting and waiting to go the other direction.

I have heard of containers being dumped at sea because of rough seas and being top heavy. An iron foundry near us bought equipment from overseas years ago. Came in multiple containers. One was dumped overboard ad the company had to wait for pieces to be manufactured again. They were not happy. Jon

Didn't you see the photo? It's wedged between the two banks. Ramming could sink both then they'd really be in a fix.

The news report I heard said it was caused by high winds. You'd think the management of the canal would shut it down during those periods. Now it's shut down for them.

Obviously his weight and forward motion embedded the bow deep into the bank. Larger excavators may be able to free some of the soil alongside the bow but not enough to float that end of the ship. I wonder if the propeller wash of several tugs pulling the bow sideways might loosen more of the mud there.

As for the stern - you said the stern may be aground too? Does this mean his propellers are damaged so he can't back up under his own power? Along with the problem of no space behind him to back up into?

And - is there a risk of structural damage, maybe sinking, from a hard sideways pull with the bow firmly embedded there?

One thing I read was there won't be a really high tide (to help float the ship) until next week.

This is going to take a while.
