Thanks Aaron. Ordered one of those up. I just got backed into last week in a parking lot while I’m the truck with it running. Kid tried to flea until he realized I was chasing him down. He stopped and let me get a photo of his license. When I told him I was going to call the police he proceeded to “get insurance paperwork” out of his vehicle and took off before I could hang up and get a photo of his car. Turns out he had a suspended license. Dash cam would’ve made my life a lot easier!

Correction, I got mine in 2018, not 2008 like I had posted. I got mine after talking with the commercial insurance rep at work, he was talking about a case where one of his clients claimed that they were driving down the road and a cyclist rode straight out of a driveway from behind a parked car and into the side of the clients car. The cyclist then claimed that they were riding down the road and the client moved to the right and hit them.

No idea who was telling the truth, but a camera could have clarified things in a hurry.

Which is why I run a dashcam.

Yup, same here, I don't feel right without having one now. There's so many videos on Youtube where without a dash cam, the person would be incorrectly at fault

He was obviously just itching to "flea"!

Seems to me those are the stupid unsafe drivers that would be at fault, not the guy hauling a trailer within the weight limits of his truck.
And if YOU would pull out in front of someone and then STOP, you deserve whatever happens to you & should pay for the others damage.

With all due respect. NO truck is designed to pull an 11,000 lb trailer without brakes. Even a tractor trailer has air brakes to all axles. That was completely irresponsible, and I can't believe the amount of posters who think it's OK. Do you also drive through town doing 70, and blame the guy who pulls out in front of you because he expects you to be doing somewhat near the speed limit? Are you one of those who drive up the interstate at 70 while 10 feet from the bumper of the car in front of you, and blame them if they have to slow abruptly for something in the road? There are a myriad of things which can go wrong when you are that grossly overloaded, and while an accident may or may not be partially somebody else's fault, the severity would be because of the overloaded vehicle.

Maybe someone could shed light on a question I have...

I see large utility trucks towing single axle cable reel trailer/dolly for lack of a better term.

The spools are huge 10' across and weigh up to 9k on 12k gvw trailers that are well built with extra heavy duty tires and NO brakes?

Jstpssng, You are talking about this specific instance, the overloaded pickup and trailer. I was talking about distracted drivers. Many years ago, about 50, I was hauling dirt to fill in behind a retaining wall. It was a standard dump truck for the time and it wasn't overloaded. As I was coming into town I notice a woman, stopped at a stop sign, putting on fresh lipstick. She wasn't paying attention and was rolling into the intersection. I stopped about 4' from her drivers door, hit the horn, the clutch and the accelerator. There was a streak of lipstick from her mouth to her right ear. I would imagine two things happened after that, she probably paid more attention to her driving and she went home to change her drawers. I have 52 years of commercial driving with no chargeable accidents. There are too many distractions, and the manufacturers keep adding more. I'm sure you have looked at some drivers and wondered what they were thinking or wished they would hang up and drive. Stay safe out there, life is short enough as it is.

Anything over 3000 pounds is supposed to have brakes. That may vary by state, but for interstate travel it's DOT mandated.
