People pulling a 2 horse trailer with no brakes with a 1/2 ton pickup. Loaded with 2 1200 lb. horses that are moving from side to side at over 80 mph on 5 year old tires that are dry rotted. And the tires are old truck tires not rated for a trailer. If lucky they may even have a tag on it. But no working lights or safety chains.
I have seen it a lot of times. $500 trailer with 2 $2500 horses.

Where can you buy a 2 horse trailer for $500?

I know its a subject that can get out of control, but many trailor tires are often times not the best tire to put on a trailor. Light truck tires have some distinct advantages. Assuming good condition of tires, properly inflated, etc etc.

Reminds me of some of the, and I use the term loosely, trailers the local roundy-round racers use to haul their, er, race cars on. Lots of hanging wires, but no working lights, safety chains missing, bald and/or mismatched tires, and complete lack of structural integrity. Usually pulled by a pickup from the last century that should be the one on a trailer.
But, they always have a big cooler full of beer in the pickup bed.

From someone who knows it's no longer safe to haul horses in.

Anything over 3000 pounds is supposed to have brakes. That may vary by state, but for interstate travel it's DOT mandated.

Up here in Quebec it is over 1000 lbs for brakes.

That’s painting everything with one brush. The medium duty truck pulling that 12k wire spool can handle it just as good or better as an S10 pulling a legal load of 1,000 pound without brakes.

It's like a bantam weight boxer vs a heavyweight... the latter can stop a lot more punch.
He was talking legal though, not what you can get away with. We got stopped with a C-65 loaded with >200 hay bales pulling a 3300 lb hay mulcher, and got a written warning to put brakes on the trailer. Of course they never did put them on...

There were a lot of those around back when "scrap" was in high demand. Sometimes you wonder why they don't leave the entire rig right at the scrapyard.

$500 horse trailers, I have one. And another that was given to me. First one, no brakes, rusted but I put new tires and the lights work. The other was home made with no brakes, lights don't work and tires have been on it for 25 years. I have not pulled the home made since it was given to me. It is used to store some hay and junk near the house. The $ 500 one was purchased and used only a few times near farm. I had to haul a horse out of town and had a flat. I put all new tires on it and drove it home. It has not been moved in several years. It is used to store tarps and some tools in it. That was 10 years ago. I purchased a newer trailer with good tires, lights and brakes on it and use it to haul horses when needed to vet. I only paid $1250 for it. The trailer plug was messed up and they could not get the lights to work. It was at a dealer. I hooked it up and drove to a gas station. Fixed to lights and drove it home.

I don't disagree about some truck tires being good for some trailers. But in some states, I have read, one will get a ticket for running the wrong tires on a trailer. Or tires over 5 years old.

Funny thing about ST trailer tires - before they were invented, we ran 7.50-16 tires and then 235/85R16 with no problems on bigger trailers. I think my old Circle J two horse trailer (A top line in the day) came with F78-15 or some such new in 1976. It has had P rated tires for years. If I were using my big trailer more, I would switch to 17.5 or 19.5. The five year change out is good.
