Jstpssng, You are talking about this specific instance, the overloaded pickup and trailer. I was talking about distracted drivers. Many years ago, about 50, I was hauling dirt to fill in behind a retaining wall. It was a standard dump truck for the time and it wasn't overloaded. As I was coming into town I notice a woman, stopped at a stop sign, putting on fresh lipstick. She wasn't paying attention and was rolling into the intersection. I stopped about 4' from her drivers door, hit the horn, the clutch and the accelerator. There was a streak of lipstick from her mouth to her right ear. I would imagine two things happened after that, she probably paid more attention to her driving and she went home to change her drawers. I have 52 years of commercial driving with no chargeable accidents. There are too many distractions, and the manufacturers keep adding more. I'm sure you have looked at some drivers and wondered what they were thinking or wished they would hang up and drive. Stay safe out there, life is short enough as it is.

I would have loved to watch that!

There's all sorts of situations like that, which is why what he did was so stupid. Plus it wasn't his truck, or his trailer.
Years ago, long before cell phones I was stopped at a light in the left lane of a one way street when a young woman came up pushing a baby carriage. She walked out into the road against the "Don't Walk" light without looking left or right; and was about in the center of my hood when I noticed a car coming up in the other lane, just as the light turned green. She never even turned her head; just stepped out into the other lane like she was in her own living room. From where I sat I wasn't sure if the other motorist even saw her until she came out from in front of my truck, and he had a green light.

Thanks, I like the hard wired idea.

.
You can get hardwire kits for any camera, I had a kit in my car that plugged into the OBD2 port, it had a motion sensor that I had issues with so I ended up removing it and just plugging into a switched power socket.

My trucks power sockets aren't switched with the key so I just plug it in when I use it. Truck doesn't get driven nearly as much so not as worried about it, but will probably hardwire it one day.

Must have been terrible to witness that.

Maybe someone could shed light on a question I have...

I see large utility trucks towing single axle cable reel trailer/dolly for lack of a better term.

The spools are huge 10' across and weigh up to 9k on 12k gvw trailers that are well built with extra heavy duty tires and NO brakes?

There’s a lot of difference in a medium duty truck and a half ton. A medium duty will stop a 12k trailer. A half ton won’t. The trucks pulling those trailers could easily carry that load on the bed.

My 3/4 ton 1997 4x4 Suburban with 454 V-8, and air shocks, will stop my 14K trailer, with perfectly functioning 4 wheel electric brakes.
I never load to more than 12K trailer GVW though, and even then, defensive driving is necessary.
It is doable,(on dry roads) but not particularly comfortable.

My 6500 truck will stop my trailer loaded to 22,000 without trailer brakes. I have brakes on the trailer though. I turn them off when the trailer is empty because they’re prone to sliding and the 5500 pound trailer isn’t noticeable. Pulling 12k without brakes behind a medium duty truck without brakes as mentioned by the previous poster is perfectly safe. Especially at the low speed they’re likely going.

People pulling a 2 horse trailer with no brakes with a 1/2 ton pickup. Loaded with 2 1200 lb. horses that are moving from side to side at over 80 mph on 5 year old tires that are dry rotted. And the tires are old truck tires not rated for a trailer. If lucky they may even have a tag on it. But no working lights or safety chains.
I have seen it a lot of times. $500 trailer with 2 $2500 horses.
