I've literally been towing, couldn't move the load forward and bought tongue weight...

Bought a few bags of concrete for just that purpose on one trip with the weight behind the trailer axle.

Those look like old stress cracks.

That front drivers side trailer tire does not look like its doing well either

Combined with the tow vehicle only being a 1/2 ton

And back to the regular presentation of those in humanity to beware of.....

Broke a long standing rule of mine and loaned out a trailor and got this back. As expected the guy had no idea how he loaded so much for the crack to happen. It痴 kind of in line with the jack.

Be thankful, he rid you of that finger pinching SOB. I have replaced a few of those that had cracked, most cracked after hard turns while loaded heavily. I am curious when you replace it, if you won't do a little investigating, I would wager it's been there for awhile, he just pushed it past it's limit and exposed/extended the crack .

Thank you !
Think it has wheels on the edges......

I'm guessing no, just due to how it's wider than the road, the wheels wouldn't do much most of the time. I assume there are purlins run side to side to pick up the outer "walls" and they rest on the deck of the trailer.

LOL! The "10 tons" sign, is abs-o-lute perfection in this photo!

 I can't believe I missed that! It is pointing in the direction he came from. He probably didn't know he was over that. I'm wondering how he was planning on unloading those pallets :scratchchin:

One at a time by hand.

Yeah, with all that weight, I think the floor it in reverse and stomp on the brakes unloading method is off the table!

Those cracks don't really have to do with the jack even though they are lined up with it... it all has to do with the stress concentration at the end of the weld on the tongue, the cracks on both sides line up with the end of the welds... It sucks but if you have a welder not a big deal, it looks like it's been around the block for a while, it happens... At least he obviously had tongue weight so you still have a trailer and neighbor! trailer sway sucks and can get bad... I've literally been towing, couldn't move the load forward and bought tongue weight...
Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like the crack isn't shiny. With the paint & other surface rust on there you'd need a much closer photo. A bit if rust on the crack surfaces indicates it's been there a while.

I don't loan out my gear except to a few very select people who are mechanically inclined & treat stuff right. Or it's cheap equipment I don't mind losing (lots of the Harbor Freight stuff I bought for a single use then sits on the shelf forever). My truck, tractor & trailer really don't get loaned out. But I will help friends & operate them myself.

I'm thinking metal fatigue over the years that opened up gradually and became more visible after the last haul. It doesn't look like anything sudden.

I just hope the driver had time and presence of mind enough to duck.

I replaced it with a much better hitch. Replaced the jack also. Safety chain attachment also changed out. This chain attachment sure beats the weld on bent pins that I have seen in use. Way better than actually welding the chains on, which I think will not pass a inspection.

Curious why you went with the side mount swing back when the center mount A frame is the same price.

I have to use side mounts on mine and had to add a second one so the tongue wouldn't twist.

You can open the truck tailgate is one potential reason.

Flip up and/or stow and don't have to crank it all the way up for clearance. I've replaced all of mine with side mounts. Only thing, I prefer the side mounted crank rather than the top mounted.
