It's EXACTLY fines I am against. Just a clever form of taxation. Send people for re-education. I wouldn't even be adverse to making thm pay for it. Why should the public at large pay, but at least the government isn't adding to their cofers. Although tit does make government jobs. Heck, farm it out!

Or the very least, like they used to do, in cases of deficiencies, allow them to make repairs and report back to a police station.

Some of you sound like drunks I've known, who say they should just be allowed to pay the fine and keep on driving, without learning anything. The trucker who killed my uncle and pregnant aunt back years ago (1964) had 3 previous fatalities, and went on to have two more major accidents before finally getting killed himself. That's one reason we have some of the laws we have.

Nope. The point isn't to get away with everything and not learn anything... just the opposite. If someone causes an issue then penalize them and make it good. So they learn. And so others learn from it by observation and being scared to do the same. But leave folks alone who aren't causing problems. The trucker you described didn't have enough penalty. He should have been in jail for years. Deterrence.

ETA: Actually, your example of the trucker is a perfect example of why my plan is better than just having laws against it. You need enough deterrence to make people reconsider their actions. Just having a law against it doesn't do much.

It's sorta like here in MN. The state recently made a law against holding your cell phone in your hand while driving. But there is no need to force ALL drivers to not hold a phone in their hand... they only need to using existing distracted/careless driving laws with enhanced penalties and hold people responsible when they cause accidents. The rest of folks who can drive responsibliy (and have been responsibly doing it since cell phones were invented) should not be artificially limited just because some folks are careless. This is the difference between the nanny mindset and the personal responsibility mindset.

So, the overloaded trailer with bricks guy, let's say he had a trouble free trip. But, what if something broke and it killed a family member of yours? Do you think the brick guy would learn anything at the cost of your family member? How would you feel? Is it fair that someone has to die so the driver gets penalized?

For the amount of weight you guys can tow in the US, I'm very surprised that you don't need to have driving lessons with trailers and theoretical lessons about all stuff that a trailer involves, like weight ratings, load placement, safety aspects, etc.

Seems like anyone can just hook a trailer to a truck and pull 20,000 lbs without even realizing or understanding what's behind all of that. And then we see stuff like the brick guy and others shared in this thread.

It's something that has to be changed and established over time. Make the penalties harsh enough and publicize the cases where bad things happen and people will adjust their habits and become more responsible. That way they understand how big of a deal it is to make bad choices, not just because "there's a law against that". "If I make a stupid choice and hurt someone my life will be forever changed." has more weight over time than "I got a ticket because I was overloaded."

Actually. I hate to repeat this, because it's not what I want to believe. But studies have shown that harsh penalties NO NOT deter people from doing wrong.

Well, obviously laws don't either. So let's choose the method that is least restrictive to folks who don't cause problems then.

Yes we don't know how far he is going, but there is usually a brickyard or supply store within a tankfull of gas. Maybe $100 for said tankfull? If he can't afford the $100 for a second trip, maybe he should rethink some of his choices, like buying 7 pallets of bricks.

Especially since jails are more like country clubs so we don't "violate someone's human rights". Sometimes those rights were taken out of the equation when they commited the crime they were put in jail for in the first place.
