Get two lengths of 3/16 or 1/4 chain stretched between front and rear tiedown loops on each side of the bed. Use this for intermediate tiedown anchor point. It won't be as strong as a real tiedown point, but sure beats nothing. Good for those one inch straps with hooks.

This right here. I have a length of chain that starts at the driver rear tie down by the tailgate, goes front, then to the passenger side, then straight back towards the tailgate. Each corner chained with a link to the actual tie down so it does not pull one way or the other. Multiple tie down locations. I can get a picture if that helps anyone?

Cylinder caps are not that well threaded. When I started out years ago in the welding trade (45+ years ago) my first job at the shop was to gather up the empties, throw them into the shop truck and go exchange them for fulls. Having to unload them onto a loading platform from the bed of a truck was a PIA, especially for the big bottles. Small ones I just used to grab by the cap, lift them straight up an swing them onto the loading dock. One guy took pity on me and showed me a pic of one of their employees that was doing the same thing and the cap let go while he was pulling up. Lets just say the dentist loved him for a few years as he helped put his kids thru school. His mouth looked like something out of a horror story, spikey teeth and all, something I've never forgot........Mike

Those e tracks are nice but can be difficult to keep debris cleaned out of the slots. Guess it depends on the trucks uses.

With the ends hanging out? Or does the skid need to be the length of the bottle?
Any skid will do just strap it tight set between the slats and strap the skid to the truck. The tank won't fool if strapped tight between the slats.

When I was in the service we wanted to be able to hoist some cylinders down into a missile silo. We thought it would be a good idea to just use an eyebolt in the cap. Safety nixed that idea. According to them the threads on a a gas cylinder are not cut into the bottle. Rather it is a ring that is pressed on. They said cutting into the cylinder material could potentially create a weak point. I did google to see if my memory was correct and found this:
How Its Made - 32 High-pressure Cylinders - YouTube

Pretty interesting on how a cylinder is made.

In a practical sense your eyebolt tiedown is definitely better than rolling loose.

Here's a situation for you.
I want to haul pallets in a dump trailer with only a single D ring in the front center of the bed. 2' side walls. Stake pockets at the top of the sidewalls. The pallets are about 4'x4' and the dump bed is about 7' wide. I can't figure out how to immobilize them. Do I need to if I limit the height of the material on the pallets to 2'? I'm sure that for most trips it would work, but I worry about that one trip that doesn't go as planned. I figure if I plan for the worst case then I won't have any problems.
