In this morning's news.

Tipped tractor-trailer blocks I-5 onramp in Ridgefield - Columbian.com

Trailer and excavator are no longer together. Inadequate tie downs, or too much strain even for good tie downs? Maybe no tie down?

That's funny! I could make so many jokes probably deemed inapropriate.

Now you know why thieves would want to steel a p/u.

I wonder how much stolen watermelons would go for, if not stolen for personal consumption.

Similar happened in my orchard. Two occasions!

First time, around sunset someone drove in who I had seen working for the contractor who harvests here, so I assumed he was here for a left-behind jacket or something. He turned off the driveway then after a while couldn't back up the wet slope to turn and depart. I got the Yanmar and pulled him back up to the driveway. Next day I asked the contractor about that and he told he he had fired that guy the day before I saw him, so he had no reason to enter here aside from stealing. I wished I had looked in his car. He likely had finished his harvest before I heard him spinning his tires.

Next time, a neighbor farther down the lane had a crane there to set some beams. After work the crane operator drove in here and started filling a garbage bag with apples. I asked him WTF and he said the neighbor had told him the apples were better here than down there. This guy looked big and mean enough to do me some harm so I thought quick, and asked him "Do you realize the situation you are in holding stolen property? Set the bag down and leave - now!" He argued he should keep the bag because he had picked the apples himself but I said just leave. Intuition told me this guy had had some experience with the law before, and what I had said was what was needed to get him to abandon his plan. He dropped the bag and left.

Last year we finally fenced the place to keep the deer out. We had become the neighborhood zoo after the surrounding vineyards all put up fences. Now I don't expect more casual theft like my examples - or like that NC watermelon farmer.

When I saw the post, I thought about how much work it was to pick and load all those melons...considering how (relatively) little they are worth.

Maybe posing as a watermelon inspector. He probably forgot the clipboard, otherwise he might have gotten away with it.

No picture but Tuesday afternoon I hooked up a trailer and headed to town to get a 20’ double walled plastic culvert. About 2 miles from the house I met a guy with a 30-36” 20’ galvanized culvert. Strapped into the back of his 3/4 ton pickup. 6.5’ bed tailgate down. 20’ culvert. Not even a flag.

Hey a clipboard can be a very intimidating symbol of authority! I put on coat and tie and carried a vinyl-trimmed clipboard when a friend asked for my help to get a refund for a 'new-never used' Iphone ... that wasn't. It had been so poorly repaired that the camera lens didn't align with the opening in the case and pictures were out of focus.

While they talked I got nosy and looked around for the store's business license that should have been posted, went in the back room without permission looking for it, and made the deadbeat seller real nervous. When I sat down uninvited to join the conversation I asked where is the business license, there is none visible and how can we file a complaint if the store proprietor is anonymous. Seller said he never gives refunds, but he did in this case.

20 years as a government auditor, you learn how to spook someone who is grossly in the wrong and knows it. :D

That's priceless and an insight into how the world really works. Most are just caught up in all manner of illusions.

No picture. Yesterday we were in stop and go traffic. Pickup zoomed by in breakdown lane (a mile to next exit). We heard quick siren. Shorty caught up to the pickup. Seems the State Trouper decided if he had to wait in traffic so should the pickup driver.

I did that once many years ago. Long line of traffic stopped for someone to make a left, so I took to the shoulder and passed them, only to find one was a cop. No wonder, no one was passing, Ticket, was drive off paved portion of highway. I never knew that was even unlawful, and don't do it anymore to the dismay of people behind me. In fact, I got caught up in a multiple rear ender as two young girls came flying along and smashed into the row of stopped vehicles.

Wales, UK

A man has been given three points on his licence after being caught driving with another car balancing on top of his own in Aberystwyth.

Glyndwr Wyn Hughes was spotted at the wheel of a silver Volkswagen Passat with a Skoda Octavia perched on top as he drove through an industrial estate earlier this year.

The 51-year-old admitted driving a vehicle in a condition likely to cause danger or injury.
