Also 580 bans trucks over 9000 GVW... which would cover a lot of pickups now days.

History Rte 58

I forgot about the 580 truck ban, but I didn't realize it was only 9000 GVW. I guess I'd better turn myself in for my own good since I drive my Ram 3500 SRW on that road sometimes. It would be fun to ask a cop why they aren't ticketing pickups (but I'll do that when I'm in my Jeep).

Thanks for the post. Interesting.

I followed this guy for about 4 miles on a winding 2 lane road. The one and only strap on the back that kept going slack then tight as he went over bumps and hills. His engine (gas) was screaming for mercy and the trailer dragged on the road occasionally. I kept my distance.

We finally turned onto a 4 lane and I was able to pass. A 7K trailer (in rough condition) pulled by a 3/4T Silverado. The front of the dump truck was "secured" by the cable from a well abused HF style winch.

Looks like strap on back is one of the 3300lbs straps. Three more would have been in the neighborhood of sufficient.

As far as weights go, there is a town in the Bay Area that won't allow " trucks over 1 1/2 tons" on their streets unless doing a specific delivery. What does 1 1/2 ton mean? Most cars weight more than that. A ton and a half truck can carry way more than 1 1/2 tons of weight. My one ton Ram is rated for nearly two tons of cargo. Empty it weighs almost 4 tons. Does the limit apply to the actual weight of the empty truck, or it's rated GVW, or the cargo? Do they allow cars that weigh over 1 1/2 tons?

In MN when they post a road for weight restrictions the number is listed as "per axle". Mostly they are limiting to 3 or 4 tons per axle at the lower end. Your 1.5 ton sign doesn't make a lot of sense even per axle though since a lot of non-commercial vehicles like HD pickups can have curb weights over 6000#. Perhaps it does refer to truck sizing, like 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, etc. I believe a 2-ton truck (F650, GM 6500) grosses at 26,000 on two axles, so that makes more sense.

Birddog, what's up with the sideways travel trailer in the background of the second picture? Did it come off the equipment trailer next to it?

I would still bet it's per axle. There must be a reason - I live on a road that has an historic 1889 one-lane truss bridge over a flowing creek. 157 feet long and just over 11ft road width. It is rated at 3 tons; sort of self-policing since you're not getting a larger/wider vehicle on it to begin with. You just need to found out why the rating is there. Is there a weak culvert under the road?

I agree with you. It probably means the "type" of truck, not the actual weight of the truck. Being unclear is the problem.

In California you can't have a pickup licensed other than commercial, unless you jump through some extraordinary hoops. It used to be that they would ask you what you intended to carry in it if you wanted non-commercial, but everything you suggested, such as dust, occasional dampness from rain, a personal camper, etc, would be answered with "'how to we know your not doing it for commercial benefit". Then they changed the rules to end the arguments. Now the code reads, "commercial like vehicle". So, in other words, if my truck is similar to another truck that is being used for commercial purposes, then my truck is commercial too.

My Dad used to hate the idea that a 2X4 wasn't 2" by 4". I enjoy the discussion about what a 3/4" pipe is. What is a 1 ton truck? Etc.
