I think the ball is welded onto the square shaft, rather than bolted through it. Also, it looks from the way the bumper is dinged up that the hitch has already done considerable side-to-side swinging...imagine if they hooked up a trailer loaded with a too-light tongue; the set-up would look like a snake going down the road (and maybe into the ditch!).

That swinging must make backing up the trailer a fun event

There was a day when simple clip on bumper hitches were the norm! <img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/files/trailers-transportation/446041-share-pics-people-hauling-towing-image-jpeg"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/files/trailers-transportation/446042-share-pics-people-hauling-towing-image-jpeg"/>

I think that was the same day they used real metal n lots of it for bumpers!

I had one also about fifty years ago. [the strap-on bumper hitch.]

I just bought the twin of this from a junk shop that liquidates estates. It likely is 50 years old.

I have a vague idea I can cut the curled end off the bumper strap, straighten the strap a little, then weld it to the back side of my loader bucket. Then I can curl the bucket forward to expose the ball, low enough to get under the trailer's hitch. Well something like that. I haven't gotten around to trying a layout yet.

Or epoxy it to the plastic bumper on your car :D

I just went to the basement and checked my chain clamp bumper hitch... 2,000 lbs tow rated with 200 lbs tongue max.

Just right for a 800 lbs aluminum fishing boat, outboard and trailer...

Your problem is solved, but I suspect this guy's problems are ongoing and not just in the hitch department.

The guy's greater problem is with Archimedes and the lever effect. Whatever his tongue weight is, it's multiplied by the effect of the "lever".

By the way, this double post thing is starting to go viral. Seems half my posts double.
