They make those couplers from 5k to 12,500lb versions but I'm willing to bet its probably a 7k.

I like to use 14klb rated couplers on 7klb trailers and 20klb rated on my 14klb trailer. I like to have a little more safety margin, plus the heavier couplers are a lot nicer to use.

And I'm sure you would never load more then 3klb on your 7klb trailers or 5klb on your 14klb ones.
For safety and all.

It also looked like he may have mashed the truck tailgate with the bucket when the tongue broke off.
Guy said in his post that the tail gate did get dinged some.

You can only go to the well of luck so many times before you kick the bucket.
How true that is...... no matter what either your lucky or not when things go sideways and sideways it will go sooner or later.... just don't need to push it like this guy did towing a trailer loaded like it was and suspect far from his first time overloading the tongue

Me I'm like TMGT, buy or go way heavier than you will need just to build in a heavy margin of safety
I have a 14000lb trailer hauling at best 7500lb including trailer weight with a 20000lb hitch with 2000lb tongue capacity and 30000lb ball on the truck
Other trailer is 12000lb derated to 9900lb hauling about 7000lbs weight on the axles.
Anytime I have maxed out a trailers weight rating ....things eventually break and only luck saves the day as was the case for this guy

Never stop learning........

Saw this going down the highway at 75+ this afternoon... I'm sure those 1" straps are holding the load securely! The 2x's were vibrating all around.

Actually I've had about 6k load on the 7k trailer and around 18k in the 14k dump. So yeah, I like to make sure the 1 point that's connects the trailer to the truck is going to stay together.
I also try to run tires rated for more then the bare minimum of the axle.

It's also personal preference, most of the couplers below 14k just feel cheap/junky.

So are we saying that if a guy buys a trailer rated 7,000 gross, and the manufacturer says it's payload rating is 6,000 with 1000 lb tongue weight.... That if that trailer is bought and loaded as the manufacture suggests.... That this trailer is extremely highly likely to catastrophically fail?

I need to know.

That's not what I took from it, that trailer coupler appears to have been overloaded and failed.

However from what I've seen,a lot of smaller utility trailers and their components are not really built to be loaded to their max day in and day out.

Me, personally would never load a trailer to it's rated specs. The engineers that designed it can show you on paper hundreds of ways why it would never break, people in real life can show you how it would.
Somewhat related story. Worked in a welding shop decades ago when tilt up construction was getting a good stronghold. That's where they pour the slab and use that to pour the walls on and lift up the 2 story panels to form the walls. The panels have embedded plates with either threaded eyebolt connections or hook to lift it from.
The drawings said 4 pieces of bent #6 (3/8) rebar welded to I think it was a 6 x 6 x 1/2" plate that had a 3/4 nut welded to it that they would use a threaded eyebolt in to lift the panel. The welders said no way is that strong enough to support the panel, we were told to STFU and do what you're told....we did.
First lift the plate pulled off the anchors, the welders were blamed for using the wrong welding procedure.
Anyway, sorry for the sideways off topic post...............Mike

Doesn't look like there's anything being transported on the rack. What did he think they were for, to look cool?

Why would you want to wrestle those sheets of particle board up on to that high rack and then the boards, lay the sheets in then boards on top just like he has a strap to just keep them in place.
I don't see anything wrong with that load.
There is a strap front and rear it's not going to blow out from traveling.
Is it going to stay if he rolls the truck, **** no, but who ties down for that.
