At a boat launch in Thailand yesterday and took this picture. Not towing wrong, but thought you all might enjoy the pics.

Question about tying down and didn't want to start another thread. I was brought up that the implement/car/tractor should be "stretched' if possible, from the frame to the trailer in an X pattern. I haul small SUVs and small pickups where it is a pain to hook to the frame usually. I am very interested in these but am concerned that the vehicle will then bounce with it's suspension along with the trailer suspension, creating a pogo-stick! Am I freaking over something that would be negligible? Thanks.

I don't think you really have to worry too much about that unless you're going off-roading while hauling- as these guys:

sell a number of different "non-frame" tie-down systems- from tire lassos like you showed, to axle straps:

to these:

as well as tie-down straps with the various frame hooks [R, T, and J hooks] and it just seems to be your personal choice, or maybe there's some other application parameters I'm not aware of.

It does say that they are all D.O.T. approved.

Here's one I saw yesterday doing 65 Mph down the highway. Only thing holding it all together is the center strap over the top bales squeezing it all together.

I usually use two straps over the top row of bales to assure the downward force is on the ends of the bales below, rather than into the crack between them, still... short of a roll-over or other serious crash, it would be hard to extract a bale from that load without unstrapping first.

I can carry over 40 bales in my short-bed RAM truck that way with full (and, I hope, not misplaced) confidence.

Many, many people tie down with axle straps with no worries.
A suspension is designed to let the vehicle move while the wheels/tires stay planted, that's kind of it's whole point for existing. If you strap the wheels down properly, they are secure & the suspension does it's thing as it was designed to.

If you strap the frame down things won't move until a force causes the suspension to bottom out harder than the straps are pulling down. Straps go slack briefly & things can move. Additionally it's one **** of a shock when the suspension gains momentum on the rebound then slams into the limit of the strap.

I don't haul vehicles other than tractors really so I don't have any wheel straps. But if I did I'd get some & let the suspension do it's thing on the hauled vehicle.
