How much does it cost to rent that truck?

Thank you... always fascinated by Horse Carriages and real pleased to have it... if the time ever came to pair down the collection the last 3 would be the 1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, the 1938 Bantam 60 Roadster and my 1931 Model A Deluxe Rumble Seat Roadster...

For decades I used a vintage single axle trailer without brakes to tow all of my cars... the trailer was built in Oakland CA and has been all over the Western States mostly towed by a Station Wagon... folks would cringe today.

I've found renting a rollback a good alternative especially moving two vehicles.

Sure... but can the kids sit backwards in the very back, making fun of passersby?

The rental was not bad... but the mileage charge got me... I went from Oakland to Ironstone Winery in the Sierra Foothills... I think it cost $230 for the 24 hour rental plus fuel...

My niece, then 4 had a blast... she loved it, the total experience and was very helpful... she had to steer both cars as I winched them onto the deck... and then step on the brakes... good thing the Bantam and Austin are small cars!!!

I was at my brothers one day and he needed to push a car... was trying to get some friends... I said we could do it and have his daughter steer... he said he didn't think so and I said ask her... then the jig was up as she said she was always helping me move cars around!!!

Model A's were actually remarkably fast in that range... it is at higher speed you would be really pushing it.

Sweet spot is 42 to 45... flat out pedal to the metal 60-65 with tailwind

That's like my 49 Chevy 4400 1 1/2T flatbed. 235 Cu In. Loadstar 6 cyl, 20" tires and 6.17 gears. Good cruising speed is 45, 50-55 with a tailwind.

A friend owned a carpet business and his Dodge MaxiVans could only carry a single roll of carpet...

He restored a 1931 Model AA stake truck with a 12'6" bed... he started using it to pick up rolls from the mill... 3 full rolls no problem... sure it was slower but more efficient than making several trips...

Also there were no commercial or weight fees due to age... it was a sweet setup...

I will always have a fondness for old iron and what might be considered wrong towing today was just how it was done back when...

Happened so fast I couldn't get a picture but yesterday I was having lunch outside next to the road at a small restaurant in our town. When a truck hauling a deck over trailer comes driving bye. It happened to catch my attention because I could tell that someone had just put a new deck on the deck over trailer and it looked odd not quite factory but nevertheless I was looking at it when it hit a bump.
Speed limit there is only 20 mph and I suspect that's about what the truck was going. He was hauling a 6 foot Bush hog (not tied down) and it shot up off the trailer about a foot and almost off the side. It landed with about a foot or two of the Bush hog off of the trailer. There was a row of cars along the side of the road that certainly would have been damaged if it would've fallen off there.

Only reason I even mention this is how many times have we all just said well I'm not going far and I'll go really slow and I should be fine. I would've never thought it would've happened if I didn't see it with my own eyes. Tie those loads off boys. Even if you're going slow and not far.

tman1020, I usually secure loads, but recently I picked up some lumber and I didn't lash it down. It was all bundled, about 2,700 lbs worth. When I got home (about 10 miles) I noticed that the rear of the bundle shifted all the way to one side of the trailer. I wanted to slap myself.

Well, I need to sign myself up for this forum. Wish I had grabbed a pic of the load. I needed to move (4) large concrete blocks. I figured each block weighed 2,000lbs. I knew my trailer had a 10,000lb capacity so I figured I was good. Well, I noticed the trailer had really compressed the suspension and the truck was sagging despite the leveling bars. Figured it was just the way I had loaded the blocks (2 over the axles, one sideways behind and one lengthwise in front). Well, when I went to move the truck it didn't want to pull the load. Got it moving and noticed that it took full effort to provide effective braking. The trailer felt really heavy, but I only had a couple of miles to go on country back roads.

Well, this morning I looked up the block weight and they are actually 3,600lbs! That means the load weighed 14,400lbs! Add in the unknown weight of the trailer and I was probably over 17,000lbs. Even with the max tow option, that is way beyond the capabilities of my f150.

What did you load the blocks with?

There's a connector ramp here between two Interstates that has a downhill tightening radius. Posted 35mph for trucks but reasonable to push a car through at up to 50. Every few years a semi-load of lumber gets dumped halfway through that curve. Witnesses say they see lumber slide off the side or back of the trailer regardless of straps. (More likely loose straps so there's no friction between layers.) Photo - Similar.
