I didn't even think much about it at the time, but there was a guy with a standard pick up truck today at Rural King with some oxy or acetylene bottles laying flat with the valve facing to the rear, and strapped down with simple ratchet straps. He was dropping them off, so they may have been empties, but are they ever really completely empty and depressurized? I wasn't there long enough to see if he picked up new ones.

It's perfectly legal to haul them on their side. We haul them on pallets that way all the time. They just need to be secured and have the caps over the valves. That's how they ship them full or empty.

I carry my empty ones laying down (strapped) in the truck bed. I just leave the valve fully open and then put the cap on - which is also slotted so no gas can build up. That way there is no pressure in them so you dont have to worry about them. That is the easiest way to make sure it is completely empty and depressurized.

Well that's just a brilliant idea.

Take an incident that has a driver 20-30% distracted (talking on the phone) and turn it into an incident that has a driver 100% distracted (physically wrestling with the driver for their phone).

Brilliant.

Kill anyone yet?
If there's one thing we learned in the past few years it's that the folks who think they know best are 100% positive that they're right and aren't opposed to telling the world about it.

Probably OK with gases like oxygen, argon, helium, and some others. However, acetylene cylinders are filled with an acetylene-acetone solution in a porous filter matrix. When the acetylene cylinder is "empty" there may be some residual acetylene and certainly acetone remaining that might leak out of an open valve on a horizontal cylinder. Also, if an acetylene cylinder is transported on its side, it should be stored upright for a period of time before use to let the acetone settle. Times of a half-hour to more than an hour are recommended. The purported dangers of acetylene-acetone mixtures range from irregular flame operation at the torch to explosions; I do not want to find out.

Same thing will happen if you try and draw off too much at one time or draw the cylinder down to almost 0 pressure. I'm guilty or running the cylinders dry and you can tell when you're drawing off acetone, there's a wet circle around the flame where it hits the platewhen you're preheating for a cut and the kerf is extremely slaggy and rough, stinks too...........Mike

I was thinking that as well. There is always acetone in an empty tank. Infact putting too big a tip on a torch connected to too small a tank will pull the acetone up though the filter and damage the tank and possibly causing the flame problems you mentioned. The ones we transport are from the filling facility to sales locations. Just a couple are just banded to a pallet. Larger quantities have 4x4s with cuts to keep the tanks aligned. They sometimes are 6 or 7 layers high. They are on heavy duty purpose built pallets. But they are on their sides. But the stores would store them upright.

That trailer the tractor is on appears to be one of the Snowbear trailers with the 12" trailer wheels. They are handy little trailers with the removeable sides and ends, but mine has a gross weight rating of 2100 pounds. That tractor weighs a little over 1500 pounds without the loader according to tractordata.com. I've over loaded mine on occasion, but not routinely. I think that tractor on that trailer is more than pushing the limits.
Nevermind the tow rating of the vehicle. Hope the trailer has brakes.
