DMV investigator told me if people drive without a license there is nothing DMV can do as license revocation is the limit of what DMV can do ... LEO said we don't have time to tow ever junket... Evolution is such that many crimes are without consequences
I know the owner of a self serve car wash whose business was burned. A lowlife kept a gas can in his beater vehicle. His fuel supply was presumed to be siphoning from other vehicles. But the can tipped over while driving and spilled gas all over the interior.

The lowlife used the self serve vacuum to try to clean it. After a few minutes, static electricity built up, and BA-BOOM the vacuum exploded. The beater vehicle car caught on fire. The driver ran away and abandoned the vehicle, engulfed in flames.

Hmm. I've had roof racks or at least the side rails for them on everything I've owned, over a long time. I'm half thinking of getting a Tesla Y next to replace little 99 Outback wagon. It's time to join the 21st century. Roof rack rails are an available option for the Tesla but with an all-glass roof, I wonder how well that really works. Maybe ok for bringing home a Christmas tree but for ladders like that with some wind stress?

One Y owner bought the rail mounts and broke the glass installing them himself. So maybe this isn't a good idea at all. Anybody know? I do need to haul stuff like in that photo occasionally. One example is my 14 ft orchard ladder. Any Tesla owners with advice on here?

Get a trailer.

Oh I have a great little trailer that's just right for my use and for what I tow it with.

I actually have two highway trailers. I originally built this tiny one as a 'jeep trailer' for offroad camping where I might have to unhitch and turn it around separately at some impassible spot. (Plus there's a twin to this one with an IBC Tote on it for orchard watering).

But when this ladder appeared on Craigslist for $25 I brought it home on the Subaru's roof rack. This capability is what I want to duplicate with my next car, whatever I buy. To me a SUV, even a tiny one like the Subaru, will be used as a real utility vehicle.

That trailer the tractor is on appears to be one of the Snowbear trailers with the 12" trailer wheels. They are handy little trailers with the removeable sides and ends, but mine has a gross weight rating of 2100 pounds. That tractor weighs a little over 1500 pounds without the loader according to tractordata.com. I've over loaded mine on occasion, but not routinely. I think that tractor on that trailer is more than pushing the limits.

Trailers have their place but when going long distances and/or on rough roads can be a pita... especially for something as easy as a ladder to throw on a properly equipped roof.

Good eye! That is a SnowBear trailer. They are great, adaptable for many uses. With the front and rear 'tailgates' down and the tongue pulled to the extended setting (photo) I have carried 16 ft material on it. But so far as I can tell SnowBear quit making trailers 10+ years ago.

I did some careful calculations before towing that load (photo in previous post). I'm right at, not over, the rated limit for tires, axle, trailer chassis (tare weight 400 lbs without sides, some of that carried on the hitch) + the tractor, and the Subaru's rated towing capacity. As shown in the photo I took the back way home, not the freeway, to not be a hazard to others as I poked along cautiously at 35 mph. I think the absence of trailer brakes was the only thing exceeding spec. Considering that, I never got closer than a few hundred feet to anyone on the road or pulling out. It was an uneventful slow 15 miles. But the guy who sold me the tractor had the same concern as you, he phoned to see if I made it home ok. :) That photo looks like gross overload but the tow rating for this model Subaru is 50% more when sold in Australia, so I think its limited towing spec for the US is for freeway safety.

That photo above is my second Yanmar YM186D. I bought it for its loader. Previously, I brought home the earlier one (no loader) in the SnowBear:

Loading at Dave's in Red Bluff. I had the seller take it there, halfway to my ranch.

One of several stops to check tiedown chains, wheel bearing and tire temperature. No issues.

I really like the SnowBear trailer. I looked just now to see if they are still sold. Apparently not. Found someone who posted he loads his 2k rated SnowBear to 3K with no problems. Don't be that guy.
