Take away the pavement and picture wagons with settlers coming West...

The no guardrail strikes me as an anomaly as to how CA does things...

My guess is too remote for elected officials to venture?

If you're not from the area, or live in flatter parts of the country, it can be difficult to appreciate just how long and steep some of the local mountain pass grades can be.

One mountain pass near to this one is Ebbetts Pass-- it's a 24% grade.

I recently drove a brand new motorhome over Monitor Pass, another nearby and very steep grade. I was towing a Jeep Wrangler and had no braking system for the Jeep. Twice during the short descent from top to bottom, I had to pull over, shut down, and let the brakes cool. Despite using tow/haul and being in 2nd gear at all times. The 2nd time I pulled over I could smell the overheated brakes.

Many of these grades have ample turnouts just for such situations. I'm guessing the F-350 driver didn't do the same ....

The engine braking ability of heavier vehicles is very limited without a dedicated exhaust brake.

Went up to Glenwood Springs for the weekend. On the trip up I70 & back saw at least 1 semi with a trail of white smoke behind it. Sad how many can't engine brake properly. Tons of signs every mile or 2 about it as well.

The gravel pull outs for lost brakes seem to always have tire marks...

Only once did I see a vehicle and it was a big rig with two trailers...

I'm guess a lot of people were glad that day!

Are you talking about a pull out or run away ramp?

We just made the trip from Moab Utah back to Illinois. I70 through Colorado can be a little scary. People drive fast and it is steep in places. You can still see the damage and there is still some lane closures in Greenwood Canyon where there was a rockslide. We were in our F150 and if you leave the cruise on it will downshift and engine brake for you, that’s what my wife does. I tend to take the cruise off and use the button on the shifter stalk.
