One part of our downsizing last year was getting rid of the pick-em-up truck. Ever since, I've been on a mission to justify life without it. We're finishing the basement in the new house. I rented the Menards truck for the lumber and hired out the drywall. I can carry 10 foot drain pipe inside my little car with the hatch partly open but here is how the cool people carry 12 foot sheet flooring!

I can't see how well the straps are secured & that might be rough on the paint. But the only "wrong" on that is the weird factor.

A lot can be said for minimizing your resourse usage on this planet. I tend towards wanting every tool for every job. Even when paying an expert with his own tools would make more sense. Trying to clean the house & barn make me regret that behavior a fair bit.

Similar to the flooring caper, I needed to bring home a couple of 20' sticks of square tubing, so I whipped up some side racks. Previously I had made some angle iron side rails with hooks to tie to as the pickup only has four anchor points in the bed. I put 3/8-16 nuts on the underside on all four corners for just such additions. Front support goes through a hole where the end cap should be. Sorry for the bad pic, lots of sun washout this morning. I made the U brackets wide enough that it will fit a 6x6, if necessary.

Back a few years when I was doing a lot of process control instrumentation (pneumatic) I would carry a lot of SS stick tubing in 1/4" 3/8" and a bit of 1/2" and I had a set of racks for the lenght of the truck including a slip fit for the front and rear bumpers, then one that hung off the door and then the front of the box. Worked real good unless you had a passenger that wanted to use that door :cool2:

I kind of wish I had pictures of the rig I worked up to haul seven lengths of 20' fence toprail, but I don't. Wood frames, one mounted to the trailer hitch at the rear and the other to the frame below the grille at the front. Both were even with the roof line where most or the weight was supported. Straps in three places along the roof. More straps at front and rear making an A shape down to each side of the bumpers. There was really very little chance of it failing, but that didn't make me any less nervous over the 35 mile drive.

This driver almost killed someone. Not just a poor job of loading, but then must have forgot they were there, as he clipped someone while driving home with the boards sticking out of the side.

That dude should be tried for attempted murder. That's 3 steps beyond freaking insane. And that's coming from a redneck, if it fits it ships, screw your axle ratings and gross weight ratings kind of guy.

Why didn't they utilize the headache rack?

RC, I agree, that was sheer stupidity and they should be tried, at the least for reckless endangerment. SMDH

Maybe not wrong but this guy sure is proud of his new John Deere. Perhaps it's just the trucks and trailers are Bigger in Texas!

Wonder if it was on the rack but not secured well when he started the trip?
