Setting shredder height?

Thanks for the input everyone.

Beenthere; what you describe is pretty much what I do. I will never get into a situation like in your second pic so the u shaped flex link on the shredder where you attach to the adjustable top link of the tractor takes care of everything I'll ever encounter. BTW, thanks for taking the time to take the pics.

I have some places where I back under hedgerows with humps or piles??? almost as bad as Been's second picture. Until I had cut the place a few times I did not remember where the "humps" were and hit them quite by surprise. A few were also in tight places so I was watching several things at once, but would have a lot of rise in a short distance. If I had had a rigid toplink like some of you suggest, I am sure I would have at least had a bent top link...or worse. I also have some ditches I cross that significantly raise the tail of the mower even in fully up position. I keep the top link adjusted so the flex link can take care of those situations.

My adjustment might not be worth a hoot for what some of you cut, but then again, I don't think the rigid top link would work for me. My BushHog came with the flex link installed, probably for a reason. Beenthere and I have more similar needs.

RobJ, you still around? So if I understand you correctly, you just hook up the lifting arms and let the shredder drag around on the frame and crazy wheel? You must be cutting your grass about 0.5 inch tall.

And about the bahia, it IS pretty hard to kill. It develops a pretty deep root system and that's one reason I seeded it in. My place in the woods is sandy loam. Man, when it gets dry, it gets DRY. I've seen the bahia get totally brown then a little rain and it turns green. Only problem, the feral hogs love the roots. I remember planting some around my pond many years ago. It got established and covered over real well. Then one weekend I drove up to the pond only to find total destruction. They had rooted furrows up to one foot deep. I had to use the box blade to level it. But after a nice rain the bahia was spreading again.

The tail wheel sets the rear height - say 5"+/-. The lift arms set the front height ... say 3 to 5", and stabilize the mower. The top link does nothing til you lift it anyway.
