The Walter were common place up here. Some still in use. Wingman was essential. Must have been a bit chilly taking those vids from the top of unit.

Also, the State just started using a few of those Towplows. Come up behind them in a snow storm and it's WTF moment for sure.

That tow Plow is interesting but it looks like a it is more complicated (and more things to possibly go wrong) than what the Idaho DOT uses. They use a "wing blade" that is mounted to the side /frame of a regular plow/sander with hydraulics. At rest it comes up along side of the truck and so it doesn't stick out the back or side. when the driver deploys it down, his front plow takes care of his lane and the "Wing Blade" takes care of the adjacent right lane or shoulder. Sorry I couldn't find picture but I am sure you get the idea as Wing blades on graders have been common for many years.

I know exactly what you mean. A wing mounted on the side of a truck or grader is not wide enough to do a whole lane. Plus with the tow plow you can sand or salt that lane.

But i wonder what the cost of a tow plow is, completely installed? And can you eliminate another truck and hired man with it? I think it has possibilities, if applied in a way to eliminate extra power units. Obviously this is on Interstate type of roads.

Not uncommon to see a price tag close to $250,000 for a fully setup interstate plow with all the salting/brine equipment.

Looks like they run $60-90k per: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/maintena...ing/2011/Viking Cives/Tow Plows/Tow Plows.pdf and http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Division... Ice Best Practices/Tow Plow News Release.pdf

From what I have read, one truck can fully clear 2 lanes in one pass with a tow plow.

Off topic a bit, but here is a V-plow with hundreds of tons and thousands of horsepower pushing it.

Nice!

PennDOT (Pennsylvania DOT) just bought a few of these:
Home - TowPLow
Any idea of where? I will be curious to see them in action.

One thing, at least with PennDOT, they are big on training. Constantly. Their regular operators should know what they are doing. Seasonal guys, maybe not so much. :D

Mainly on 80 and 81. I saw them testing them last winter on 15 near Harrisburg -- pretty neat to watch. They ran 2 or 3 of them last winter but just bought something like 6 more for this winter.

A guy I know drives for PennDOT and went for training on them last month (out in the midwest) but I haven't talked to him since he got back. I can't wait to see what he has to say about them.

I expect you'll see these on the PA Turnpike initially...and in the NW PA routes (90, for example)
