Harv,

Go for the concrete. Although digging out rocks can be fun, you do want the tether ball court in before she goes to college? Rock on.

Great essay Harv! Something Dave Letterman would call Infotainment. I too will show this to my wife to prove that making a huge crusade out of a small project is common and easy to do!

I'm with the concrete voters. The only difference is instead of cutting it down I just push it over. My junk pile has several poles with big chuncks of concrete bulging at the end. No problem!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I love it.. "infotainment"

Reminds me of when i got my 30" dirt scoop for my little yanmar tractor... I had some dirt delivered, and I backed that little ( 23hp 17?? lbs ) into the dirt all she would go, raised the 3pt... put it in forward.. pulled out of the dirt.. and then procede to teeter totter for a few seconds untill lowering the 3pt... decided i needed some real weight on the front... though it is not the first time my but has clamped down on the tractor seat.... holding on for life...

Anybody try that quick-setting ready mix? It exists, doesn't it?

Yeah but it still takes a little while (couple of hours) to set properly.

Cheers

Harv, I have the same problems over here, a whole 45 miles away/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

This is why the rental places have jack hammers.... For Ian's play yard, we had to set 14 posts. This was before the tractor, so I rented a 2-person auger. Well, that made 5 of the holes. Back to rental place, rent a 60lb Bosch demo hameer and heavy exstention(sp?) cord...

The foothills can be brutal with rocks.

Oh, by the way, it's harder to accidently bury a 3pt pto auger..... Although you can see why you buy the shear bolts by the box/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Harv,

There's that green stuff again! And little orange things that look like flowers. I remember those, but ours are still covered in snow. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. Looks nice and comfortable there. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, but that would require forethought and planning. Did you see any signs of that in my tale?
Next time I'll just have my buddy from Shingle Springs come over and rip it out with his bare hands. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

If I can fit it in the bucket, it's as good as buried. You think this was the first time I've done that?

Yeah, I was actually disappointed that I had to wear my vest that day. The daffodils had already bloomed and run their course before we got there. It's been a strange year for weather so far.

Harv,
Been there, done that. Here in Middle Tennessee, we have the expression of a thing called the "County Rock". Thats the rock you hit that the whole county is sitting on. A few years back, I had this "small" little rock poking out of the ground in my back yard. It was just high enouph to be annoying with the lawn mower deck. My neighbor across the street has a large Ford backhoe, so I decide to borrow it for a couple of minutes (yah, right) and pop the "small" rock out of of my yard. Well, needless to say 2 hours later and a hole 12' wide and 10' deep, alas, I have gotten the rock out. It was in 3 pieces, laying vertical, just below the suface of my lawn. The hoe had a terrible time trying to get these rocks out. Estimated each piece weighed around 5 to 7 thousand pounds! After that, any "small rocks I found in my yard, I just took a hammer and chisel and knocked the top off of them.

Believe me Harv, after chipping through a foot and a half of stone, still a foot to go with no end of the stone in site, I felt the same way.

Dave

Yes have done the same thing at my old house in Suburbia.

Needed a bobcat to get it out. Was like an ice berg with just a hint above ground showing what lies beneath..........

Yuk

/ Seemed Like Such A Simple Project #38
I had a similar situation too.

I wanted to add a deck to the back of my house - just a small one only 2' off the ground. But Fairfax County Virginia code says that the supports for any deck must be sunk at least 36" deep. I hit solid rock ledge at 18" down and NOTHING would convince the inspector that any other solution than putting that 6 x 6 down another 18" into that rock was not going to risk the lives of everyone in the county.

I love it out where I am now - there were no building codes until just this last summer and there's no record of what structures looked like before then.

Harv, I'm sorry but not only during but after reading your quick project, I've been laughing my butt off. Boy can you tell a story. But do you really have to go to those extremes to get seat time in the tractor?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Good luck on your next simple project.

Funny you should put it that way, Gordon. My wife's comment (with a slightly disdainful tone) was, "You can turn anything into a tractor project, can't you?".
