I intend to weld a 3T Gunnebo style hook onto a 3/8 backing plate and then weld the plate to the top of my FEL bucket. The bottom of the hook flares to a flat base approx. 1-3/4 x 4-1/2". Gunnebo-Johnson's welding instructions, which are given in 6 languages, are cryptic. I gather that I should lay a 1/4" fillet (6mm "throat") along the sides of the hook with 7018 rod. Crosby's instruction differ but are clearer: Make a minimum of 2 passes with E-312-16 rod completely around the base to create at least a 5/16" fillet.

My original intention had been to tack with 6011 and weld with 7018. Would that be adequate? Even with curl I doubt I can exert 3T of force.

Secondly, welding completely around the base of the hook will leave a small, sealed space between the bottom of the hook and the plate. My experience has been that unvented spaces will "blow" the weld when one tries to seal them. Is it best to leave a small gap?

TIA,
Captain Dirty

You're putting a lot more though into this than I did. I welded the whole thing with 7018 and it hasn't broken off.

I would use 7018, and weld all the way around.

Just get some 7018 and start welding..IMG_20121117_162424_854.jpgIMG_20121117_162438_547.jpgIMG_20121117_164305_653.jpgIMG_20121117_165303_772.jpgIMG_20121117_170314_242.jpg

Can't argue with the three posts above, but I'm not posting pics of mine. There might be almost a 1/2 inch total of weld on mine that is that nice, maybe!

Stick with your intention to tack with 6011 and weld out with 7018. That is the way I would go- reinforcement plate, then weld to FEL in line with the lift cylinders. Weld all the way around the hook and the plate. You may need to stop just prior to closure to let it cool off and vent any gas then finish closing the space. This will prevent any water from getting underneath that could cause freezing and/ rusting.

Do what this guy says. he's welded everything to everything. Just look at that weld quality. Wow, that weld could hold the Queen mary.
Disgusting isn't it?!

One thing I know for sure is that my little Kioti's FEL is not going to bust it...:D

Yup, as for the void space there's not going to be enough volume to blow out. Use the doubler plate as you said and go at it..Mike
