I intend to weld a 3T Gunnebo style hook onto a 3/8 backing plate and then weld the plate to the top of my FEL bucket. The bottom of the hook flares to a flat base approx. 1-3/4 x 4-1/2". Gunnebo-Johnson's welding instructions, which are given in 6 languages, are cryptic. I gather that I should lay a 1/4" fillet (6mm "throat") along the sides of the hook with 7018 rod. Crosby's instruction differ but are clearer: Make a minimum of 2 passes with E-312-16 rod completely around the base to create at least a 5/16" fillet.
My original intention had been to tack with 6011 and weld with 7018. Would that be adequate? Even with curl I doubt I can exert 3T of force.
Secondly, welding completely around the base of the hook will leave a small, sealed space between the bottom of the hook and the plate. My experience has been that unvented spaces will "blow" the weld when one tries to seal them. Is it best to leave a small gap?
TIA,
