Security Camera

I've had a few signs on my property since I built it 10 years ago as a vacation home. Never a problem. I was talking to the police chief this summer in town and he said "isn't your house the one with all the network cameras?" lol, word gets around, nothing wrong with that.

Last year for a construction project, I set up a remote IP camera, connected to router with 4G modem. I did have power at site, and I put the modem/router in a small locked rack in a pole barn. over 70000 pictures were sent to a remote computer running a free ftp server. pictures were triggered by motion, but wind, grass, trees will trigger a lot. I tried to turn motion sensitivity way down to minimize "false" trips. after the construction project, I made a time lapse video of the construction project, it alone is still over an hour. I'm trying to trim it way down, but haven't worked on it in awhile. Here's a couple pics from the camera, one caught the building inspector, and the other showing the amish framing crew at work. I designed the building, and the builder had an architect provide final stamped drawings.

USB 4G modem (I got it for $20) Amazon.com: LG VL600 4G Broadband USB Modem / Aircard - Verizon: Electronics

I have 4 of these cameras, and I can pull up the view on my phone, direct from the camera's, without needing any other software or recorder. (I could not remote view with the 4g modem, now have cable internet)

As a reference, its 70' to the vehicle, 200' to the edge of the building, and 280' to the portapot on the right side, according to my cad drawing.

added a photo I just took from my phone, it's inside the front doors of the building, in total darkness.

I'm done pushing game cams since the OP doesn't seem interested but will mention that my 8 megapixel game cam easily captures license plates.

What model does this? Neither of my game cameras will give me license plate images that are readable.

I purchased the Bushnell Trophy HD Trail Cam with Wireless. to use until we set up something else. It takes pictures, night or day, of vehicles driving down our driveway. Thumbnails are then sent to a website via wireless signal at the next check in. You can purchase hi-res images of any particular image you want. Basic service is $10 per month. I've ordered a hi-res image of a pic of my car, it appears you can identify the license plate. Already very interesting to compare when contractors say they are going to be there versus when they actually are.
This is a good alternative since I will be 1500 miles away. I was struggling with the internet connectivity as they is no power there, or internet.
What about multiple cameras, double data plan??
Thanks for the share.

I have a linksys router model # BEFW11S4, will it work as an extender for my security system?
If so where do I put it, on the camera, on the PC or somewhere in between?

As others have said the router will work as a wireless extender, with some non-trivial configuration work.

But if you only need to extend a few devices (like fewer than 3 or so) look into this as an alternative:

IOGEAR Universal Wi-Fi N Adapter - network adapter - GWU627 - Wireless Adapters & Accessories - CDW.com

There are under $40 each and you would need one for each camera you want to extend. So if you only have a few cameras, it would be much cheaper than using a router as an extender, and even better it's much simpler. You simply plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port of the camera whose range you want to extend, and other end into this iogear device. This iogear device becomes the wireless access point for the camera you are extending. It assumes the camera's IP address and its network configuration is much simpler than putting a router into bridge mode.

These iogear devices require AC power and are not outdoor rated, but that's also the case with a router that you're putting into bridge mode. They also have to be wired with an Ethernet cable to the camera, but it looks like that's also the case with the router solution?

I have two of them in my setup, and they work great.

Not sure as I only have the one but it appears they charge by images, not cameras. Their plans.

Just to be clear, the camera does not instantly upload the pictures and notify you, as it's intended as a game camera, not a security system. It uploads roughly every day. But it has captured vehicles coming and going.

Here's an example of a high-resolution image I purchased and downloaded. I have obscured the contractor's name and moved the license plate numbers around so you can see they are identifiable but that's not a real registration number to protect his privacy. It gives a date, time and temp stamp. And I cropped the edges to make it a bit smaller.

Full size.

I wouldnt need such a time constraint, just to capture the person or vehicle. those are very impressive clarity in the photos, thanks for sharing.

That is impressive. I wonder if the resolution on mine would get better if I had it do photos instead of videos. I'll have tinker a bit with its settings.
