Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, I'm curious to know if anyone on here has experience with installing screw piles with a drive head on their tractor. We built a new shop on our farm last year and hired a screw pile company out of Calgary Alberta to do the installation. They were great and not too expensive but we will need to use screw piles for some other projects and we want to see if we can do it ourselves. Has anyone found a good drive head for these piles that will work on a tractor or skid steer? I know some people who have used post hole augers but have had trouble because of the low torque. Thanks in advanced!

It's my understanding that the screw piles are put in until a specific torque is reached. To me that means a specialized driver with a torque sensor on it. I doubt that any tractor or skid steer drives commonly available will work. You might be able to use the tractor or skid steer hydraulics as a power source so you wouldn't need another engine and pump. Check with the screw pile mfgr to see what they have available for low usage.

The only way to manage this is rehire the company that did the work for you before as you need a large enough
track drive excavator or over the road water well drilling truck with a hydraulic system able to power the drill head
and mast to do the work as many of them use a drilling system with gear reduction and planetary gear drive for
the drill head.
You are better off just hiring these folks again and having them do all of it at once and be done with it until you have
another large project to do.
Was the reason you chose this method over a below grade concrete footer for the foundation and slab on grade concrete
a matter of cost per square foot?

I actually set all mine for my Clearspan Truss Arch building with my 3 point post hole digger, made up a special drive adapter and the all went right in without any issues.
