I don't own a .410, but it would be a good snake gun. And if you are a decent shot, squirrel gun. 20 gauge is way overkill, pun intended. way too big for snake, (gun and load) and really for squirrels too.
But besides that. Be careful shipping or having shipped into the state of kaliforniastad. The Soviets in charge have made it illegal to receive ammo without their background check. You run risk if family mails into you direct from out if state. Just sayin. Me, I'd be taking a trip and bringing back myself (car, not aeroplanes). Ammo while not hazmat, must be externally marked to be shipped legally anywhere. Which coming into kaliforniastad, might make it be opened.......

I have never understood the use of the 410 by an adult. Ammunition is always more expensive.

I have a 20 gauge as well - and a 12 gauge (currently loaned out) and a .22 as well as a couple of hand guns (take those hiking with snake shot) and a Russian made Romanian army rifle with huge shells - drops wild pigs like a load of rocks. I started using the .410 as it seemed like a bit of overkill to use the 20 gauge for squirrels. My daughter has an air rifle and is getting pretty good with that with squirrels and wife likes it because it is quiet - and I suppose it is a bit more satisfying to get one with a pellet than a .410 - she likes the sport and challenge of it, I just like dead squirrels. I do have a couple of boxes of 20 gauge shells and once my 410 shells are gone (likely within a day or two I will have to use the 20 gauge. Still, if I can get .410 shells that is the one I will be using.

Last year we shot 132 squirrels, and this year we have 77 as of noon today. Also trapped a few.

Since you're in California it's going to be especially problematic. The rest of us can go on-line to the ammo search websites and find out who has it and get it shipped directly to us. Here's one site, there are others.

I dont eat iguanas (yuk) but there are folks out there that do....

I use a .410 to prevent oversharing of our orchard and garden with squirrels. I have a .22 rifle, but find that I need a .410 as apparently I am not a very good shot. Anyway, it is almost impossible (and recently seems impossible) to score .410 shells here - and believe me I have tried. Yesterday I went to gun show just to try to buy a few boxes but they had none - so $10 to park and $10 to enter and left with nothing.

Anyway, I checked and it seems that you can ship ammunition via UPS (but NOT via USPS) from out of state - with some guidelines and with California having (obviously) a few additional restrictions. It seems I need to have the ammunition sent to a licensed local dealer where I can pick it up - maybe a fee to do that. I will ask my brother in Nebraska if he can obtain the ammunition there and send it here. I have checked out just ordering ammunition from online dealers but so far find that companies do not ship to certain states including California - still working on that. If I cannot work this out I may look into air rifles and learn to shoot better.

Has anyone done this? Are there other alternatives? Suggestions?

yep ,hard time finding .410 in Louisiana, but most pawn shops that handle guns could receive ammo and send if they are the friendly type they may do it just for shipping charges. I have a .22 and plenty ammo but I prefer using my .17 hmr the bullet is .177 size but it's hauling at 2500 fps and if the scope is sighted it don't miss at 100 yrds whereas a pellet rifle will never be that accurate or powerful, but ammo in all calibers are most of the time hard to get. I purchased two nitro piston air rifles and up close fifty feet you will be pleased but beyond that it will disappoint but it's like a firearm you still have to find the ammo that it shoots best. But yeah if you take a pellet rifle and shoot a few thousand rounds you will find your aim getting where you want it and they are fun, I got the Crosman vantage with open sights it's the least costly and actually functions better without a scope, I will never get another pellet rifle that can only be used with a scope.

I've tried the pellet gun route to take out squirrels and I did nail a few but I didn't spend the time to become proficient. I bought a cheap pistol when I should have been looking at quality rifles. I may try again. I enjoyed the relative quietness of the pellet guns.

Crosman makes a nitro piston several different models but I prefer the open sights on the vantage it's better and least priced and a single cock of the barrel pushes out 900-1000 fps, it states 1200 fps but that's the alloy lite pellets that won't hit anything. It will shoot clean through a leather boot up close.
