Scoring ammunition from out of state

I can't help you with the importation laws into CA, but I think I would consider looking at places near where friends or relatives live outside the realm of CA and see if they can find you some, or purchase some. Then follow the guidelines of how to get them back into the CA Compound where you live. When this mess first started, I purchased every box of 410 ammo I came across for a short time, simply because it was my Bride's choice of ammo when it came to removing slithering critters from our yard, via a Thompson Contender. Of all the ammo, I have to buy, I can not let that one run out, or will suffer the wrath of an unhappy Wife.
If you have .22 LR available, maybe it is time to sharpen your skills with a rifle in that caliber. When I was a kid, my Dad bought a farm with a pond. He gave my Brother and I a box of .22 LR and a single .410 shell for the beloved Savage model 24 Combination gun and told us to go eradicate the snakes in the pond (while cleaning the tree limbs out of it dropped from Willow Trees). We used the .22LR to kill the snakes, and the .410 barrel was kept in reserve in case we ran across one that wanted to come after us, or a nest of them that needed a blast into the middle of it. We actually got pretty good at hitting a swimming snake!

Might want to make a call to UPS concerning shipment of Ammo. I just did with regards to primers and it appears you have to have a contract with UPS to ship them, which entails all the HAZ-MAT training and documentation of a HAZ-MAT Shipper, and it must be picked up by them. My first thought is all these individuals selling ammo and primers and powder on the internet and shipping it UPS may be breaking the law, or at least UPS policy.

I use a .410 to prevent oversharing of our orchard and garden with squirrels. I have a .22 rifle, but find that I need a .410 as apparently I am not a very good shot. Anyway, it is almost impossible (and recently seems impossible) to score .410 shells here - and believe me I have tried. Yesterday I went to gun show just to try to buy a few boxes but they had none - so $10 to park and $10 to enter and left with nothing.

Anyway, I checked and it seems that you can ship ammunition via UPS (but NOT via USPS) from out of state - with some guidelines and with California having (obviously) a few additional restrictions. It seems I need to have the ammunition sent to a licensed local dealer where I can pick it up - maybe a fee to do that. I will ask my brother in Nebraska if he can obtain the ammunition there and send it here. I have checked out just ordering ammunition from online dealers but so far find that companies do not ship to certain states including California - still working on that. If I cannot work this out I may look into air rifles and learn to shoot better.

Has anyone done this? Are there other alternatives? Suggestions?
Move out of California,...... but not to the NE!

The second picture must be of a Tippman miniture 1919, something I have only seen in person one time! The squirrels in your neighborhood must come well heeled!

I have never understood the use of the 410 by an adult. Ammunition is always more expensive.

Get a 20 ga and be happy. More pellets per shot and the same range and safety as a 410. Also easier to reload for. If this "new normal" has taught you anything, you should be looking a getting a used MEC 20 ga loader and learning to reload. Or buy a few cases of cheap shells when (if?) things get back to normal.

I am a prepper so believe in self-sufficiency. I reload for everything except .22's. Nothing wrong with a pellet rifle but you need skill to use one and a cheap 20 ga is more effective for critter control.

I grew up in West Texas and the .410 was the consument snake gun of the area. It was never considered a sissy gun at all, just another tool.

.410 in a Contender or Snakecharmer is a lot easier to handle than a 20 ga.

Except the OP is shooting squirrels not snakes.

If I had to deal with snakes, my weapon of choice would be a larger caliber revolver with #9 shot filled cases in the first three chambers. Add three "normal" cartridges in the last three chambers for dealing with coyotes. Good idea to learn how to quickly index to those rounds if need be.... and stop firing at the snake after the third round...LOL

#9 will shred a snake up to about 15 feet.
