I use a .410 to prevent oversharing of our orchard and garden with squirrels. I have a .22 rifle, but find that I need a .410 as apparently I am not a very good shot. Anyway, it is almost impossible (and recently seems impossible) to score .410 shells here - and believe me I have tried. Yesterday I went to gun show just to try to buy a few boxes but they had none - so $10 to park and $10 to enter and left with nothing.

Anyway, I checked and it seems that you can ship ammunition via UPS (but NOT via USPS) from out of state - with some guidelines and with California having (obviously) a few additional restrictions. It seems I need to have the ammunition sent to a licensed local dealer where I can pick it up - maybe a fee to do that. I will ask my brother in Nebraska if he can obtain the ammunition there and send it here. I have checked out just ordering ammunition from online dealers but so far find that companies do not ship to certain states including California - still working on that. If I cannot work this out I may look into air rifles and learn to shoot better.

Has anyone done this? Are there other alternatives? Suggestions?

Reload, if you can get powder, shot, and primers.

If you can't get supplies, get rat traps. :(

I'd be planning a vacation to surrounding states to check out the ammo problem.

Cabelas in Verdi, NV (Reno area) has had almost zero inventory of ammo for a very long time. It used to have a huge inventory.

In CA, I think you are also now required to get a "license" to purchase ammo.

I've tried the pellet gun route to take out squirrels and I did nail a few but I didn't spend the time to become proficient. I bought a cheap pistol when I should have been looking at quality rifles. I may try again. I enjoyed the relative quietness of the pellet guns.

It is something like that. Several months ago I found some at a BIG 5 and had to fill out a form, answer a few questions and show my DL. They left me for about 5-10 minutes - going into a back office - and then came out, had me sign something, and then I could buy the ammunition. That happened 2-3 times - I guess it is a mini-background check of some sort.

I'm often amazed at what people in California will tolerate. I have ammo shipped directly to my house, and I never gave it much thought. I haven't bought any in a long time, because I have plenty.

The problem is going to be finding any. Anywhere

Here in East Texas, shotgun shells have available in all the local stores. I haven't looked for 410 since I don't have one, but I've bought plenty of 12 gauge shells without any issue. Other calibers, especially .22 and 5.56 are hit and miss, along with some of the more popular pistol calibers.
