Does your county school have after school care? The schools my kids have gone to have had child care at the school when school was over.

If the school system does not have an after school program do they have a list of child care places that would take the kids after school? I did this as a kid. I took a bus from my school to an after school program when school was over.

When we moved from the city to the country our oldest still went to the school near my work. Our child was going to a Charter School which are publicly funded schools in NC that any child can go to regardless of their county of residence. My round trip drive from home to work is 72+ miles. In the morning my kid would sleep. At night we would talk on the way home. Now she is going to a closer school which is easier on us and her.

But I miss the long talks we used to have on the drive home.

Later,
Dan

One of the biggest issues with babysitters is I never know when I will be home...I am on call 24-7 and have to work until the job is done. My wife does not have a designated shift and schedule can range 12 hours difference day to day. Our current sitter will keep the kids most any hour of the day as most will not. There is not much job opportunity in our communities. We have to drive a minimum of an hour to find a town of more than 4000 people. Closest towns are almost 30 minutes away.

get rid of the kids... doesn't seem you have time for them...

Rough statement, but if work is THAT important... maybe you should rethink it...

Tell your boss, you are no long 24/7... family comes first.

You might have to sell the tractor and other play toys... I saw what my dad went through.

Just go to Mexico, jump the border then send the kids wherever you want.

We do have to work a lot but that is because we want to provide for our kids--Not live off the government. There is a lot of people around here in government housing and food stamps but we choose not to live that way. Tractors provide 1/2 of our household income-sometimes more. We do not live the "High Life" but have many extra expenses from years past that we are obligated to pay. There are family members that could step up and help us but they are too busy spending their money on the latest things...We dont live that way at all. If anything we have given to others more than we should have to make sure they have what they need.

Does your present school district have only one elementary school, or are there "choice" (magnet) programs you could apply to? Also, any charter schools?

I can understand your concerns about placing your young ones in a safe place, but after teaching for 25 years and serving as a school board administrator for the past ten years, I gotta tell you from firsthand experience that turnkey kids are very susceptible to bad stuff. Unfortunately Teg may have a point. You may have to adjust somebodies schedule to be sure the little one is safe.

When my son was young, the wife had to take a leave of absence for one year from teaching and work part-time to make the school schedule work. It痴 not easy and I can understand your angst with a very young school age child.

We we were in the same position 34 years ago that is why my wife had to quit here day job as a computer programmer.
To be a stay at home mom but we needed some cash so she started driving with the tribe in tow.
Her programmer salary would have put us in a better position now but it wasn't in the cards.
We did what we had to do at the time to survive and that included no vacations me working full time and a part time job a gazillion hours at work not seeing my kids for days at a time push mowing our 2 acre lot cars we had to have 3 or 4 for me keep 2 in running shape (remember I was at work a lot) again sit down with you expenses and what's needed and what is wanted tighten your belt you can do it hundred 's of us have.

Another option is home schooling talk to the baby sitter maybe she will help with that but look into it they actually pay for our internet now with my granddaughter in 2nd grade and it doesn't cost us a thing other than time.

Harsh... but like Tig said, your priority is misguided.

I am not looking to cheat anybody. We just need to send them to the other school. We are looking to move that direction someday but the economy has really put a kink in our plans...

Pay the fees or move.

Some schools 'swap' tax money, ask them if they do that.
