Cub Cadet SC2450 and Deere 3320
I just bought a SC2450 and overall I'm very happy with it. However, the backhoe struggles to dig into my hard packed virginia soil. I know my technique will improve over time - but right now I think I could probably dig faster with a shovel! :)

Would getting a smaller bucket help? I have the standard 12" bucket - I think there is an 8" available as well that might be better for digging around roots.

Any other thoughts?

I find when the surface is hard if you just get the teeth to dig in a little and just toe in and scrape the surface off, digging will get much easier after that without yanking the tractor all over. Any way works for me.

I dug footer trenches over the summer, some was in clay, and didn't have too much trouble with the 12" bucket. Took me a while to get used to it though.

Have you checked the pressure on the BH?

Yes, a smaller bucket will help.
