Salvage John Deere Tractor

My 2007 John deer 4520 cab tractor burnt to the ground on the side of the road. No reason why. Everything was destroyed except front end loader (all hoses burnt) and wheels. I am not sure how to get rid of it nor how much is th salvage value. Does anyon know? I do have pictures if needed.

The loader is probably worth $1500 to $3500 depending on condition.
The rear wheels are probably worth $500 to $800 or so if they are not burned and have decent tread.
The front wheels are probably worth $300 to $500 if they are not burned and have decent tread.
As a package it's probably worth $3,000 to $6,000.

that's very odd, because Diesel don't burn unless it's finely atomized. maybe someone poured gasoline on it, and lit it?.. I've only seen the JD 4520 having a Diesel engine!..

It's not an uncommon occurrence, if you get hay, chaff, fluff from cattails, etc built up in the engine compartment and on the exhaust manifold, it can light up.
If you blow a oil, diesel or hydraulic line and it sprays on the exhaust manifold that will do it too.
In either case, when you get hot enough to melt the plastic fuel tank it's not going to go out until it burns all the fuel or you get a firetruck on scene.

Excavators catch on fire fairly often when a hydraulic hose starts to leak and the fluid gets too hot, or when working on adding material to a burn pile and a hydraulic hose fails. It's not the diesel fuel, it's the hydraulic oil that causes the fire.

Trying to see parts is usually a huge waste of time. Machinery Trader has adds for scrap yards that will pick it up at your place, but I don't know what they pay, or who is better then the other. I have bought from a few and have found them to be honest in what they sold me, but I also paid more for those parts then I wanted to. Sometimes you don't have any choice!!!

I’m not sure where you’re getting your information. Diesel isn’t as volatile as gasoline but it certainly will burn. Why don’t you go pour some out and see what happens when you light it. It probably wasn’t started by fuel anyway. Assuming it wasn’t started by a vandal it was probably an electrical fire.

Sorry to hear about your tractor.
From what I've seen over the years you will not get much out of it.
If your lucky you may get $1500-$2,000 for her, if the local salvage yard doesn't charge you for hauling.

Another BIG problem is when they break down in the field..is when the mechanic breaks out the "Blue wrench" & catches the chaff & cant put it out..

If you are lucky, you might find someone who needs some of the still useful parts. Otherwise, as scrap it's worth $200 to $250.

Heavy equipment up here generally have automatic extinguisher systems... sometimes they work, other times they don't. I knew a contractor who had a 30 ton timber harvester burn back when the price of scrap was sky high; before he had time to haul it home, some "scrapper" had taken it.

Used motor oil also works well. We put it on our burn piles, 2-4 cups on a flake of hay, I put 4-6 of those around the outside of the pile and light it off with a propane torch.

You likely wont get more than scrap steel price for it. There may be some salvageable engine or transmission parts but that would need to have a specialized buyer to get more than scrap price.
I dont know that I would even trust the FEL if it got hot enough to cook off the hoses, it may have warped up the frame. I dont think the quality of the carbon steel would have suffered since heating doesn't usually affect low carbon steel but it may be hard to get it off and back on another tractor.

Cardboard also works well if you don't have any hay. It soaks the oil up like a sponge. :thumbsup:
