Safe for yellow metals?

I bought some "Super Tech" 80-90w GL-5 gear oil and it reads;
"protects against corrosion of copper or bronze bushings".
Will it be OK in my JM 354? Bronze and copper fall into the
yellow metals catagory don't they?

Hey Kbone,

I've been using the Super Tech brand in my 224 for about 130 hours and so far so good. I opted for the 85/140 though, since it is so warm down here on the coast and because it is thicker and may help to prevent leaks. The heavier oil seemed to help the tranmission shift into gear easier also. I am pretty sure that the Bronze and Copper statement will cover the yellow metal category.

Yep.. sounds safe for yellow metals. Nice to know supertech is. I've also found a penzoil product that is safe as well.. gearplus line.. etc..

This is just based upon what I've read on these boards in the last year or so. But it would seem GL5 is almost universally "compatible", and that it's GL4 where you need to closely examine the container for a statement to that effect.

And from what I've read so far, it seems MT1 is universally safe too. I only found out about MT1 last year when I was investigating the yellow metal thing. Since it's forumlated for non-synchro gear boxes, I may give it a second look next time I need to resupply with gear oil.
