As to your point #2, I admit you caught me on a technicality ... [most] individual teacher's salaries are not an extravagance by anyone's standards ... my, unqualified, point was the per pupil cost, in the current broken public education system, is extravagant.
As to your point #1, I see no reason why you should not now be an expert on at least a portion of the local geography of California.
