Another good reason not to live in the city:

The Professional Panhandling Plague | City Journal

That's all over the city I work in. Just made panhandling legal again in the state. Folks came out of the wood work, and always the same people on the same corner looking for handouts. Asked one of them what they did for an income before panhandling became legal. Got a big F you for my troubles

Vilonia is a nice little town. Spent many an hour working at the school there, terminating fiber optic cable and programing data switches. Are you referring to Conway or North Little Rock?

My favorite line is " I'd be afraid living way. OUT THERE in the dark. I just laugh and tell them that the vast majority of criminal riff raff tend to live and ply their trades under those bright city lights. Besides most folks out here are equipped to defend themselves which makes us much less attractive victims. Then there is that infectious disease called the HOA and we want absolutely no part of that insanity.

Pan Handling, people defecating/urinated and sleeping in doorways plus thousands of smash and grab are almost seen as normal these days.

I have to be very careful who rents my home in the county as the entire thinking of a city person is different than someone with country roots.

My Dairy Farm Grandparents were always a little stand offish of city people... too many of their friends had issues with land sales, etc...

What is that song... A Country Boy will Survive?

PS... I had a home in the city for rent but it was at the city limit with a rural feel and had a family that really seemed interested and checked out great... then several wild turkeys meander up to the back porch and they were out of their in a New York minute!

Wow, wild turkeys! Now those things are really mean. I was on the back deck a few days ago, and a group of turkey mommas with their young ones wandered up out of the woods. Picking for bugs and ticks I suppose. I was happy to see them. Nothing sounds neater than when you are sitting in your deer stand in the early morning and the turkeys come off of their roost and glide by with their wing feathers making that unique buzzing sound as they glide by. Sounds like a flight of B52's. :)

Yes I was referring to Conway. :) Depending on which school, and which route you took to get there, then you passed anywhere from 1/2 mile to 2/10 of a mile from my house if you were staying in Conway.

Wife and I were doing the tourist thing in your neck of the woods last month. Stayed in the campground next to the bass pro shop in Branson. Actually gonna be passing through there again next month on our way up to Osage Beach. Looking at some property near there that my wife is interested in.

My reply is usually "Out here I can ride my lawnmower around naked while firing a rifle into the air and yelling MERICA! and there is no one to care"

Completely unrealistic: You didn't mention beer.

Yep, stayed in Conway. I think it was Hwy 64 to get to Vilonia? Anyway just a short drive each morning. I used to work for Windstream, and was based in Harrison. I live up by the Northwest edge of Branson. Just out of town, but close enough to have cable and high speed broadband!

What I hear most is the issue of being so far from both high quality (state of the art facilities) and emergency medical care and assistance...after that it's mostly..."but you have to drive so far to get groceries" etc...then the argument tends to go back the other way to how bad it sucks to live in this armpit of a city or that armpit of a city...!

My rural county is having quite the opposite trend.
MANY Millennials are moving to my county,,, the ones that can afford the lifestyle.

The suburb trends are becoming a thing of the past, the Millennials are tired of "keeping up with the Jones' "

My daughter moved near me 2.5 years ago, over a dozen of her friends , young professionals, have followed.

Dozens more would move today, if they could find the right place.

The Millennials are patrolling the county every weekend,, waiting for something to come on the market.
They like the lifestyle,, I guess,,
I have lived there since 1982,,
Sometimes, those Millennials visit my daughter, and look at my place like vultures,,
They wonder who will get my place when the wife and I pass,,
I have had to tell several,, I have no interest in selling,,,:D

I've had success with this- slowly and calmly state- "you were made for the city" then take a moment to look them head to toe and then in the eye and say -"it suiting you well"

Then change the subject or walk away.

If pressed state we were all made to walk different roads.

Most individuals look down on what they don't know or understand. Ignorant ones belittle the above points.

Arguing over this is like wrestling a pig in mud. You quickly realize the pig likes it.

There is no reason I can think of that makes sense to bash someone's choice to live where they want and can afford to live.

However, if you live in a rural area and like it then it's probably because of some specific freedoms that you have living there. If you cherish those you probably should be concerned about your city cousins and how they view things.

The population is concentrated in urban areas. Not everyone living rural is conservative but they tend to be more conservative than city dwellers. There are inherent conflicts between urban areas and rural areas in every state legislature.

I wouldn't agree that 'who cares' is a good attitude to take unless you really don't care who is telling you how you will live, work and play in the future.

i thank the Lord every day for the time & the way I grew up & the way we lived. Born in 1939, now just a grouchy old fart all by my self. 25 Miles to the edge of the city. At times that is a pain in the butt.

Today I did forget several things, but the Dolor General has most of them. It's about 5 miles away. 3 Of them on a bad dirt road.

Very little noise unless I make it. 1 Place south of me, up for sale & no one there. Across the easement is another person, rarely out.
Have a friend 400 yards away. If he makes noise I don't even know it.

No night lights or side walks, just me & my mutts. Main mutt rarely barks. Could shoot bunny's, Or get a dozen quail or doves with 1 shot. Nope never happen. Feed the birds & rabbits get their share as well, plus some squirrels .

Fire department will show up in time to put out the embers of what is left.

That's all for now

Those dollar stores are really showing up everywhere now, and one tiny problem/blessing of being out in the country is sometimes you have to be your own first Responder.
