I have a '63 Ford 4000 gas (172 ci). I pulled a plug the other day and it was dry, but sooty black. What is the best way to lean it out a little? It has a Marvel-Schebler carb on it. Is there anything else that could be contributing to this besides the carb? Also, what are the best plugs to use in this tractor? Thanks for any help you can give.

Timing? Also, what sort of "work" is it doing? Slow idling or light duty in HOT humid weather will cause rich condition. Weak spark? (look at entire ignition system) Air filter (all the way to carb)? Low compression?

Screw the main jet in about 1/8 turn and try that.. make sure it doesn't hesitate when you goose the throttle.

AL437 plugs will be good. They are 1 step hotter heat range than the oem h-10 plug specced for that tractor.

What FWJ said was right. Weak spark and blocked breather will also cause sooty plugs... ( clogged breather acts like choke.. enriches ).. Also.. a weak spark may have made the prev owner enrich the mix to make it fire. etc.

Clean up all electrical connections.. use metal core wires.. check points.. etc.. and all electricals.. including ignition switch.

Hi Momark,
In addition to what the other posters have suggested you might want to try a slightly hotter plug if your use on the tractor is light duty !

Example, my 49 Farmall suggests Champion D-15 plugs, but those plugs are for a working tractor not an occasional odd job :) Instead I use D-21 a hotter plug and dont get the fouling and carbon buildup. Just something for you to look into!

Thus my advice on al437 / ch h-12 .. vs the ch h10 normally specified.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Checking all those things out ought to keep me busy for a few minutes. Ha! Will definitely try the hotter plugs and adjusting the main jet, then will go from there.

Actually.. my post may not have even been there when you posted, even though you posted well after me..... I just noticed last night that I could make replies to a sub.. and they would not show up for minutes to hours. in fact.. when they did show up.. -many- other reples would also show up. Kinda like the the boards was 'sticking' or something. i was gonna go back and delete my message after I thought about it.. but I couldn't.. I went to bed before it showed back up!!

I'll take that one as a 'my bad'...

have a good day.

Yes Chris,
I have noticed that also at certain times  Anyway I have a bad habit of not thoroughly reading the whole thread before I offer my 2 cents

And I have some memory problems at times, like yesterday when I somehow mixed up titanium and magnesium  I have machined both of these materials in my 35 years in the trade but it just didnt register at that time

See what happens after 55 :)

I was going to comment on what you said, but I forgot what I was going to say..... What are we talking about?

Getting old is no fun, but it sure beats the alternative.
