RPMs when starting up

I hear the "common sense" thoughts, but then I think the engineers who conceived, designed and built my tractor more than likely know a whole lot more than me about engineering and design. :D

I hope they know more than I do if not we all need to sell and do something else.

BUT, what are the engineers trying to achieve? I suspect that controling emissions is a bigger deal than engine longevity. My 4520 with throttle down starts up at 1300 rpm and I would prefer something closer to 1000 rpm.

With our 4320 I've found it tends to hesitate and blow a lot of smoke if started at minimum throttle when cold, seems to "catch" and go smoother at about 1/3 which I thik is what manual says. I'll usually do that so building isn't full of smoke but turn it down almost immediately.

On both my JD 4010 (with glow plugs) and 240D Benz, these require about 1/2 throttle in really cold weather for them to start and to continue to run. Just throttle them back to about 1200-1500 rpm once they start.

Best protection for the engine on cold starts is a good 0wxx oil in the crankcase. That oil will provide instant lubrication to the valve train even down to -40 C/F.
