RPM problem?

I just got a L2350 w/fel. It's my first tractor so I hope It's a good one. I didn't notice until I got home, but the tachometer doesn't make it over 2000rpm when it's full open. The specs say 2800 max and 2400 pto min. I hope this is a tach problem and not an engine problem. Any ideas

My first thoughts are check the throttle linkage. When you check the throttle linkage, on the side of the pump (towards the front right side of engine on all of mine) there should be an adjustable stop to limit the full throttle position. See if it is making it all the way to the stop. See if the paint is missing on the screw like some one before you may have adjusted it. Is the needle on the tach bouncing around or is it pretty steady? The only way I can think to verify your actual engine rpm other than seat of the pants, it sounds like 2000 rpm to me

, would be to get a strobe (timing light) or hand tach. Obviously a normal cheap timing light won't work on a diesel. There are hand tachs that all you do is put a white mark or reflective tape on shaft and you can measure the rpm, but most of us don't have them at home. Did you get this from a dealer? Depending on what you find you may see if a dealer can verify the engine rpm. I would guess they would have the equipment and it should be very quick and simple to check.

I took a quick look at mine and the full throttle stop has a wire loop thru the set screw. So hopefully yours does too.

Is it a new tractor? If not how many hours does it have on it? Does it spit and sputter when it reaches the max RPM or does it run smooth and hold steady?
If it does not run steady I would look at the simple stuff first, like fuel filter fuel, valve partially closed, restriction of some sort. I would check the air filter and intake hose for a resistriction. Just some ideas to check that are simple.

it has 875 hrs on it and revs right on up sounding strong and smooth. I haven't made the full move yet so I'm back in town right now and headed back to the land this week. I'll fuss with it and look at ya'll's suggestions and let you know what I find out.
