Royal Purple question

Just ordered Royal Purple 10W-40 online, and putting it in my diesel truck for the first time (usually put in 15W-40, but figured 10W-40 would do since that was the one that was available ). The web page said it was for both gasoline and diesel. My question, is this true? Is there no CI indication for diesel on this type of oil?

What type of diesel truck are you putting this oil into?I would be a leary if there is no ci approval for diesel engines.I have a 2004 dodge cummins diesel and use 15w-40 or 5W-40 syn.You can also post this question on this website Bob Is The Oil Guy

On their web site, the ONLY oil Royal Purple indicates is for diesel engines is their RP Motor Oil 15w40. No need to visit oil discussion sites where they delve into the minutiae of oil. If there's no API Cx (C followed by another letter) rating on the oil it's not for diesel engines. No more complicated than that.

Whether an oil rated for diesel engines is approved for your diesel engine is found in your owners manual.

If you just want a good basic diesel engine oil - go to Wallyworld and get Shell Rotella-T synthetic 5W-40, available in gallon jugs around $18. This is what I use in our Cummins 5.9L (2006) and in my JD tractor. I also used it in my Jeep CRD when I had it. No problems in any of them, and runs noticeably better than dino 15W-40 in the Cummins and tractor.

If you want to spend more and maybe get more - start looking up Amsoil, TRC, and Schaeffer's options.

Royal Purple does make a 15-40 for diesels as stated and you should be able to pick some up at the O'Reilley's Parts stores in your neck of the woods. They are a distributor for RP. May be easier than ordering on line and you can take it back.

Sam - The P.S. is pretty particular about oil, from what the guys at the Ford Truck Forum say. Here's a thread about 15-40 15w-40 synthetic - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Check your RP and see if it has a "C_" designation. Some of the guys over there are using some form of 15-40 RP with good results. Maybe yours will work after all? Of course, a lot of them are also using Rotella "T" (which, I think, is officially a 'cult' item ) 5-40 with good results, too.

FWIW - my brother is running Delvac 15-40 in his.
