rough running 3020

I have a mid 60's 3020 gassser that is hard starting, burns rich and is running really rough and even rougher under a load. Any ideas where to start.

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carb.Did you run Ethanol blend gas in it?That stuff is tough on older equipment.

I have found Pertronix points replacement modules to be a good way to eliminate points. Motors start and run a whole lot better. 1145A or 91145A are the part numbers for a 3020. For good prices just google the part number. This is in addition to what nybirdman has said.

My neighbor thinks it may have a bad valve, but the exhaust does not suck inward at all which makes me think not. My wife got me the last gas so there is a possibility of some ethanol. That's it blame it on the wife!

Agree it sounds like carburetor. May be float bad or float valve leaking. Is this a tractor you have had a while? Has it always run rough? Has it been tuned up lately? I don't recommend Champion plugs in these engines. Have not had good luck with those. I usually use Autolite with good results. If still using points, try napa points and condensor. They are superior to what Deere sells these days.

Check the air filter too. On friends tractor that would barely run (after 18 months of sitting) he found the air filter housing completely filled with a mouse nest.
