Land Pride RCR 1860 rotary cutter. Why is there a small hex socket INSIDE the larger hex socket on the gear box oil drain plug?

That's just part of the manufacturing process, in this case rotary broaching. When cutting the hex, it pushes the material in and creates like a small hex inside.

They could go with a drill after the fact to clean it out and make it look better but that costs money and at the end of the day, that's just a simple drain plug.

It could also be used as a backup (by me) after I stripped the other one when trying to remove. 😆
