C02 is what you get when you completely oxidize (ie burn) carbon. Because it's completely oxidized, it's nice as a shielding gas for fire extinguishers or welding, or for adding bubbles to your favorite beverage.

I understand that, it was westcliffe01 who was saying it could be used as an oxidizer. I have no clue what he was explaining.

While a runaway may be spectacular it doesn't mean the death of the engine as the OP found to his relief. Several of my off-roading acquaintances have rolled their trucks and had them run away with no ill effects save for the need to replace all the lubrication. If done often enough though it will eventually kill the motor as it gets starved for oil as it reaches the end of the event.

True, even if it won't shut down, I have seen more diesels actually just lumber along at a couple hundered rpm "forever" until I could get the air cleaner piping off and put a clipboard over it. Most of the time it doesn't get to an uncontrollable OVERSPEED condition.
If it gets enough combustible material into the cylinders, it will gain RPM, and if it gets more fuel to go with the increased RPM, it will rise more... as long as the fuel supply is there, rpm will increase to the point that other things start breaking.. usually its the valvetrain components. The RPM will reach a point where the valves cant get out of the way of the pistons and things start bending/breaking. Get enough of them damaged and the engine will shut itself down due to lack of compression.

And a whole bunch more information learned. Like one poster said, this scares the stuffin' outta me. Things you didn't think you needed to know. :D

What concerns me, aside from the fact that you have an engine running full bore, is the fact that, as the oil runs out of the crankcase, there is no longer oil to lube the engine cylinder walls, main bearings and top end. This can't be good!
