Rodents Chewed Main Engine Harness 🐁⚠️😫

I had to replace my tractors wiring harness due to rodent issues…they also ate thru fuel tank…about 7 years ago. The Kioti harness was about $250. I installed it myself, as it’s pretty easy to just lay it alongside old one and swap wires. Only took about an hour. Repairing fuel tank took longer. I encased repaired tank in 1/4# square steel mesh to keep vermin from rechewing tank. No problems since ….knock on wood.

I get parts at Jordan sales in post falls idaho regularly… luck for me it’s only a 40 minute drive. There a TYM and Kioti dealer, parts and repair facility. Great to deal with.

Rodent damage was also a problem on early house wiring. They used the outer covering to make nests.
On vehicle wiring the problem is that the type of plastic used is plant based and therefor food for rodents. I believe they have since stopped using that style of insulation.

I've read somewhere that some insurances no longer cover rodent wire damage.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I finally got ahold of the service/parts department where I purchased the tractor. Sent them photos, they are going to try and source the connectors for me and we'll splice them into the old harness. Thats the plan anyway. Theres only 3 that need to be replaced, I'd hate to rip out the old harness just to replace 3 connectors but we'll see how it goes.

Leave the hood open like someone already mentioned, thats worked for me when I had a mouse problem.

I need more barn cats. Slowly but surely - owls & coyotes reduce their numbers. They just could not learn - DON'T go out beyond the influence of my big yard light - at night.

I have done frame and harness replacements and it takes forethought to do it right. Take lots of pictures and mark where the harness runs with a grease pencil. If it were mine, I would splice connectors in. Be sure to solder and use shrink wrap....seal it good. If done right it is permanent.

I have given up on barn cats. Owls and coyotes get all of them. I now use Tom cat bait stations everywhere.

Many modern wiring insulation is plant based. In other words ,Soy. Same with engine plastics like fuel lines.

Rodents are drawn to them by smell.

Hello everyone,

The other day I went out to start the tractor and noticed multiple check engine lights on dash. I immediately shut it down and begin to inspect the engine. Well to my horror I found a giant rodent nest. So after cleaning everything out and inspecting I found a few spots where they decided to have a snack. It looks like the main harness took all the damage. The wires connected to the middle injector, the bundle of wires that go to the DPF system and what I think is the cam position sensor. I've attached some photos. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good parts supplier ?

Look on you tube at the 5 gallon bucket rolling log mouse traps. They don't have to be reset between catches
They work while you sleep. The uncaptured mice will be back for more.
