The other day a couple of younger (40ish)neighbours who owed me a favor came over to cut, split and pile a bunch of firewood for me. I wasn't home at the time and they couldn't get my old woodsplitter hooked into the hydraulics. Been a couple of years since I've used this particular splitter myself, but when I got home at 10am I hooked it up and they spent the day doing about 2 bush cords. I then removed the splitter and stuck my weights and skiding winch on the 3pth.
The next day we were moving a bunch of stuff between our old and new abode with the snow bucket and at one point I dropped the 3pth "anchor". When I went to lift it to move, it wouldn't raise.
I just pulled the pins and left the weights on the ground so we could get stuff moved before it rained.
Today I got out the book and isolated the problem to the valve.
Pulled off the plastic, seat, shift handle (JD 4300HST) etc so I could get at the valve.
When I pulled the valve cover (housing) off, I found a well chewed "O" ring drifting inside.
I then pulled the valve itself off (a Sauer Danfoss unit) and could see a piece of "crud" holding one plunger where it shouldn't be.....The crud turned out to be a piece of sintered brass, which I was lucky enough to get out by partially dismantling the valve itself.
My book gives lotsa detail on the 3 spool FEL valve but nothing on the rockshaft valve so I tried to call Danfoss as I wanted to know if the O ring could be out of it's innards or from something farther upstream. After calling South Carolina and then Illinois I gave up. (I'm in Ontario)
Before I re-assembled everything I checked the inline filter on my "Power Beyond". Sure enough, the bottom of the sintered brass element had a chunk missing, as well as a sealing ring that was only partially there.
Once I got everything back together it all seemed to work. I just hope I got all the brass out of the lines ......
