Heck, .50AE isn't expensive.... try finding some .440 Corbon. (That's a .50 AE case necked down to 44 cal)..... Have to form my own brass before I can even play...... (It's chambered in an AR15 upper....yes.... 300yd and under set up). I don't know why I went for those odd ball calibers (other odd ball, 6mm PPC USA on an AR upper, free floated, 24" bull barrel w/ a 50 power scope. Making brass for that takes a bit more time....OR.... another AR upper in 357 Sig, yes, the pistol round.)

A 22LR will work for killing the rodents, but it all depends on your range. 22LR is CHEAP to shoot, going to 22 Mag is another story. A 223 Rem (aka 5.56x45) is cheap enough and has enough energy for those little varmints.

The .357 case is 2 milimeters longer than .38 case - to make sure you will not load .357 to .38 chamber.

Yes, but I mean the cartridge designation.

The .357 mag is longer than a .38spl. It is the same diameter bullet though. I seem to remember reading some where that back in the 1800's when they came up with non-uniform catridge naming, that sometimes they named them for the case dimension.

I have three cases, on .357mag "Blazer" load, another .357mag handload, and a third empty, but sized and deprimed .357mag case. All loaded cases measure 0.375, so I guess you could round that to .38. The sized casing measure .370".

This may be, as someone else mentioned, a size of the barrel lands vs groove too...

Yup, sometimes the name has nothing to do w/ the caliber of the round. Look at .357 Sig and .38 Super (both semi auto pistol rounds). Both use .355" bullets (same as the 9mm Luger/9mm Parabellum).

How about the 44 Mag? It uses .429" bullets......

And don't even get started about if the barrel is measured via the lands or the grooves.....
