For ones that may not know...

Someone decides what sounds best I guess. Take the 44, it's actually a .429! Why didn't they just call it a 429 magnum? Lots of cartridges like that. Just because it's called xx caliber doesn't mean much :D

I'm trying to remember... Doesn't this relate to to measuring off the case of the round instead of the bullet? .44Mag is .429, so is .44spl. 38spl is .357, while .357mag is, .357.

Didn't this have something to do with some calibres being designated before there was a standard measuring and naming convention?

Th .44mag came in late, but was simply a bigger 44spl, so maybe that is why it got its name from the old catridge(makes no sense though, because of the .357mag?)

The .357 case is 2 milimeters longer than .38 case - to make sure you will not load .357 to .38 chamber.

I'm thinking the 357 case is about 3mm longer than a 38 Special? Anyway it is longer for purposes you posted.

Robert, the strange thing is the 357 is really a .358. I can't see no rhyme nor reason for these so called calibers?

I thought the variation had to do with the bullet diameter vs. the barrel diameter. Or maybe its inside the rifling vs. outside the rifling?

Anyone here shoot 38 loads in their 357 for 'light target'??

Anyone enlighten me on center verses rim?
Can't you get a hollowpoint in BOTH formats?

Hi Richard,
I see five pages of mostly very informative data here.
Yes, you can get the 22 rimfire in hollowpoint.
As you have seen here, there are so many variables in cartridges that your question is hard to answer.

Generally speaking, centerfire cartridges are much higher powered than rimfire cartridges - as described in this thread.

Short range gopher and groundhog shooting with a 22 rimfire is not the most humane way to destroy those critters. Might be with gophers with enough shooting skill but when I shoot a critter, I prefer they not hear the shot that kills them.

Having said that, I would consider a 22 rimfire (magnum) with a solid bullet as sufficient with groundhogs IF you are able to succesfully accomplish a head shot. The 22 mag with a hollowpoint is much more effective if the "hit" is a body hit.

Head shot with 22 mag solidpoint, they do not hear the shot, upper torso shot with a 22 mag hollowpoint, they will be just as dead (usually) just takes a few seconds (or minutes) longer to die.

Hope this information along with the other information here helps you make a decision.

Personally, I prefer the Ruger Mini-Rancher in .223 to be ideal for small game out to 150 yards or so, but again, there is an awful lot of valuable information in this thread. Keep asking to narrow your choice.
