Rice Farming

Interesting clip -- thanks for posting it.

Do they grow rice in your part of Mississippi? South Carolina was a major grower back in colonial days. There's still at least one SC rice grower with a specialty/niche market.

I live about 5 miles from the Cox farm you are speaking of. Never ate any of his rice but I've seen it for sale in specialty shops. Pricy compared to regular rice. I want to think they sell it in Cracker Barrel restaurants. If my memory is correct, 5.00 for a 1-2 lb bag.

I would say so! Their Web site doesn't provide weights but white and brown rice are listed @$5.20 and gold rice is $9.32. The Missus and I like to support SC agriculture, but it looks like we will be sticking with Uncle Ben.:)

I agree point, its a boutique thing, that is out of reach of most South carolinians and so many will never consider buying it. I think he must have to cater to this crowd to sell enough for a living. If he did it normal and had to charge just $1.50 more a bag most still would not buy it as the walmart mentality has set in, so even though there are many like you that would it would not allow a business to operate i guess? I think i had it once cause my cousin got it for free. Did it taste any better, i really dont think so its just a mental thing.

That guy inheirited a big plantation, no telling how many thousands of acres of land he owns, so he isn't trying to make a living, it was made for him before he was born. I also think it is used in RedBone Alley, an upscale restuarant here local, in their "shrimp n grits" dish.

Yes, he definately caters to the rich, Mahatma, Minute Made and Uncle Ben don't feel the competition for sure.
