Retrieving Previous Private Messages

I am sure this has been dealt with somewhere before but I couldn't find the thread or a relevant FAQ. My question is how does one retrieve a previous private message? Or is it a one shot deal?

Are you talking about something you already deleted? Or something you sent?

Something that was sent to me that I read once but had to get external info to respond. Now that I have the info to respond, I can't find the original message that was sent to me. I didn't think I deleted the original message, but maybe I did. If I didn't, where would I find it?
