Resume question

I hope you would invest some time in to modern job hunting training.
Especially if you have not job hunted since internet was real big.

You must make a new resume for each job you apply for.
Normally it is only via web that you can apply.
Most only take word files, or the web sites own web form.

Keep it to one page, 1st because you must edit or make a new resume for each job posting. 2nd; because the reader only spends 10 seconds reading it.
(That is a fact!) They might read it again after they narrow yours down out of the 60,000 others reseived.

Join a job search network group, especially if your in the tech industry.

Happy job hunting!

Try and get a phone number for the company to make a follow up call. I've had jobs that I thought I was passed over on because of the long delay, and found out through a phone call that the position was on hold because of sickness, vacation etc.

Also keep customized resumes and a record of positions and contact info applied to so that you can intelligently respond to phone calls regarding your resume.

Also beware of seemingly legitimate inquiries received through e-mail. Seems scammers troll the job boards looking for info on people. Always perform an independent verification of any e-mail inquiries. Don't rely on links in the e-mails.

I've seen a lot of resumes cross my desk over the years and I written a few myself.
My 2 cents.
Give me a good cover letter that tells me who you are and what you have done.
If I'm interested I will read your resume. Two pages of resume is enough.
Include the glowing reference letter.
If you can make contact with a department head or someone who makes the hiring decisions, follow up calls can turn things in your favour.

edit: I agree strongly with the comments given about customizing your letter and resume for each job.
I wish you good luck!

Tig, I agree. A custom targeted cover letter a two page resume AND the letter of recomendadtion. On the resume I feel very strongly about starting off at the top of the resume with your objective followed by a very short summary of your work experience and job skills.

I have a small business and most of my hiring has always been by referral. But keep getting resumes. A phone call to ask about sending it has always impressed me. I have helped this type with who I knew may be hiring if not me. Faxed or emails ones get little attention. Colored paper will stand out in a stack. A few years ago my oldest was working on her resume for a local company. Asked if I may see it. Looked good, my only suggestion was add two references who we both knew, the CEO and CFO. Do advise any referrals so they will be ready for a contact. Hope you well. kt

Again, thanks for the input.

Yes, all of my referals know I'm listing them.

Guess I'm wondering if 4 personal and 16 business are too many, however, I've covered a larger area than most people in my position and have listed the people by region (sp?).

The four personal are all people that I've worked with within my old company, however, they are all who I would consider good friends.

Again, sincere thank you to everyone.

I think the more references you have the better. It shows you made an effort to get the references and more importantly, you have that many references. :D You also increase the odds that someone reading the resume knows one of your references.

My resume has gotten me employment. But KNOWING people has gotten me positions as well. When I moved to NC, my resume helped me get a job at a company as a contractor. After a 5 years or so I got fed up with the work environment, lies, and angst so I gave 6 weeks notice. Walking down the hall to go eat lunch and I ran into a manager I had worked with in the past. He was shocked I was still a contract employee and said if I needed a job to give him a call. :D Ate lunch and gave him a call. Got a job. :D Been working for the same company but with many different managers and positions for over 10 years.

Before I moved to NC the resume got me a position. At that job I met someone else who hired me into their company. :D Seems like a pattern. I guess that means if the current gig goes away, I'll have to send out resumes which will get me a job which will lead to another job from someone I met at the first job.:D

Later,
Dan
