Reseeding Winter Wheat?

Okay, I planted a mixed 5 acre plot of winter wheat and oats last fall. It did excellent and had beautiful seed heads and limited weeds. I mowed down a patch of it for dove season and it is drawing the birds in very well.

I had planned on mowing an acre or so every other week during dove season and then in mid October discing it in and that would effectively plant it. Well, after a rain this week the stuff I already mowed down has germinated and is growing in pretty well. I don't think I should disc it in should I? Should I just go ahead and mow the entire 5 acres all at once and see if it all starts growing like the stuff I just mowed? It seems to be coming up fairly thick.

It'll grow just fine from teh volunteer. You could either mow the whole thing or do an acre at a time, the end result will be the same. I used to do that in my garden plot but would till in all the residue and rely on the seed to sprout, it always did on the unused portion. Made a nice green crop to plow under in the spring.

I would probably only disc if you were going to reseed. That just helps the decomposition process of the old stuff.

On a slightly similar note, I'm going to look at a 40 year old combine next week. My pigs may finally get some grain from our farm. I've just been cutting wheat and oats as hay.
