Does anyone have knowledge on the mitsubishi s4l and what is the difficulty involved with repowering to something else. My main concern would be the gearbox to engine mount

Bell housings are standardized, but there are a number of sizes. figure out the S4l measurements and determine its size and repower with an engine with the same size bell housing. there is a lot of info online to tell you how to determine whats what.

I found an online manual for a S4L, it states the S4L has an SAE #5 bell housing. I'm curious, can your engine be rebuilt and if so, why isnt that an option?

I have no information on your engine or tractor to share.
That said, the Bell Housing is 1) issue, but not the only one.
You also have the issues with the transition to the tranny. That includes the flywheel to the motor, flywheel to the clutch assembly and then the output shaft. All can be overcame, but the cost may make it more reasonable to replace with a different tractor

Engine can be rebuilt. I would need to source a block and the crank and one connecting rod are pretty messed up also
