Replacing seal in the bottom of a bushhog cutter

/ Replacing seal in the bottom of a bushhog cutter #31
My reason for filling my gearbox with corn head grease ($20 total, including shipping and an extra tube of grease) is that I'm not sure how to or if I would be able to get the old seal off; by all descriptions, including yours, it's a real bear even when you know how. If I knew I could get it off, I would have replaced it. And just to assure you, I'm not offended at all. Just pointing out why I personally went the corn head grease route and got-R-done.

It may not be that hard to get off.
I was expecting the worst on my 20 year old 4 ft slasher when I had to replace the seal and was pleasantly surprised how easy it all came apart with a bit of leverage .

For those concerned with using grease in the gear box, King Kutter now ships implements with "000" grease in theirs. It's looks like cold honey.

Another good NLGI 0 grease to use in the gearbox is Lubriplate 5555. I buy a 5 gallon pail about every 10 years and use a pail hand pump to fill the gearbox. I discovered it because it was specified by International for bottom rollers on my TD340A, and it doesn't leak out so fast wehn the seals are bad. Prices vary from about $110 to $160 for 5 gallons. Has the same properties described above in this thread.
