Hey guys,
Is it possible to replace the piston rings in a tractor engine without having to separate it from the gearbox? i.e. having to break the tractor in half to split the engine open. I have rebuilt smaller engines from frame type vehicles where the engine is easily removed and put back in but a tractor is is different story, with the engine being part of the frame itself.

Thanks for your help

Yes, if you can remove the cylinder head and oil pan.

We did it on a Fergie TO-20 without a problem. The biggest concern is getting the oil pan gasket back together correctly and all that takes is a bit of care. It will all depend on your model of tractor and whether the oil pan is part of the frame.

Did it with an old Allis Chalmers WD with no problem. I guess it would depend on your access to the crankshaft.

It can be done on most tractors, however, splitting a tractor in half is not hard, and does not take long. Once split the rest is a cake walk.
